Audiobook Review: The Cursed Horde King (Howard of Elthika, #2) by Zoey Draven. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A bewitching spy. A ruthless king. A love that could ignite a war.

Amaia has worked hard to make her family proud. As the star apprentice to the pyroki-master in Dothik, she’s weeks away from inheriting her mentor’s coveted post. But when her desperate brother begs her to take his place in the Heartstone Accords, a diplomatic exchange with their rival nation, she agrees to the unthinkable. Her mission? Cross the sea to Grym, secure work at the dragon hatchery, and spy for the throne.

But Grym is nothing like she imagined—and neither is its formidable king.

Merciless and calculated, Alaryk Arn’dyne is as feared as the ancient dragon he commands. Gifted with powerful heartstone magic that can twist minds, he’s impossible to deceive…and a dark temptation Amaia needs to avoid at all costs.

After a deadly curse strikes Alaryk’s dragon, Amaia knows she can save him, forcing a reluctant alliance with the very person she’s sworn to betray. As their forbidden attraction grows, however, she discovers a male scarred by a painful past, whose wicked needs make her burn.

But when an unexpected crime threatens to ignite a war, Amaia must her home, her heart…or the ruthless king who could destroy both.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Amaia is a pyroki apprentice in Dothik who is close to inheriting her mentor’s position when her brother asks her to take his place in the Heartstone Accords. What starts as a sacrifice for her family becomes much more complicated when she is sent to Grym with secret orders to spy for the Dothikkar. Amaia also has a secret of her own: rare heartstone magic that allows her to heal living beings, something she has been forced to hide.

Alaryk Arn’dyne is the Karath of Grym, a formidable ruler with the ability to manipulate minds through his own heartstone magic. He is also bonded to Samryn, an ancient Elthika who has been struck by a deadly curse. When Alaryk discovers that Amaia may be able to help his dragon, the two are forced into an uneasy arrangement. She agrees to help Samryn and learn more about controlling her magic, while Alaryk agrees not to use his mind magic on her.

I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop through that arrangement. Alaryk initially has every reason to distrust Amaia, especially because he can sense that she is hiding something, but there are some surprisingly tender moments as he begins to let his guard down. The scenes involving Amaia healing Samryn were some of my favorites because they gave her connection to the Elthika a purpose beyond the romance. I also loved Samryn’s cranky personality and the bond between him and Alaryk.

Highlights and Limitations

The dragons were absolutely one of the highlights for me. I especially enjoyed seeing more of the Elthika and how their bonds with their riders work. Samryn’s curse gives the story an emotional center because Alaryk isn’t simply trying to save a powerful creature. He is desperately trying to save someone who is essentially family to him.

The chemistry between Amaia and Alaryk also worked for me. Their heartstone magic creates some particularly intimate moments, and I liked the contrast between Alaryk’s ruthless public persona and the much softer side he reveals around Amaia and Samryn. His guarded nature made the moments when he actually opened up feel meaningful.

I did struggle with the spy storyline, though. Amaia is sent to Grym specifically to gather information, but the actual spying felt less developed than I expected. Much of the tension comes from the threats made against her family rather than from Amaia actively gathering intelligence. That made some of her decisions frustrating for me, particularly because I kept thinking she could have handled certain situations differently.

The eventual betrayal and fallout did give the romance some much-needed emotional weight, and I appreciated that both Amaia and Alaryk have things to forgive. Still, I would have liked the consequences of some of those choices to hit harder. I wanted a little more groveling and accountability before everything settled into the happily-ever-after.

Narration

The audiobook has a large cast, with Stephanie Németh-Parker and Aaron Shedlock leading the narration alongside Marcio Catalano, Angelina Rocca, Amy Hall, Sean Masters, James Cassidy, Crystal M. Lee, and Sean Orlikowski. The full production runs about 11 hours and 49 minutes.

I thought the multi-narrator approach suited this story particularly well because there are so many characters and perspectives woven through the plot. Stephanie Németh-Parker gives Amaia a nice balance of vulnerability and determination, while Aaron Shedlock brings the darker, commanding quality I wanted from Alaryk. The supporting voices help distinguish the wider cast without pulling me out of the story.

I also liked how the narration handled the contrast between Alaryk’s intimidating presence and the quieter emotional scenes with Amaia. Those moments are important because so much of their relationship depends on what they are willing to reveal to each other.

Final Opinion

I had a lot of fun with The Cursed Horde King. The combination of dragons, forbidden magic, enemies-to-lovers tension, political intrigue, and a dangerously powerful Horde King is exactly the kind of fantasy romance setup that pulls me in.

For me, Samryn was one of the unexpected scene stealers, and I became especially invested in the relationship between him, Alaryk, and Amaia. The final stretch also surprised me with how much emotional weight it put on forgiveness and trust.

My biggest reservation was definitely Amaia’s spy storyline because I wanted that element to be more substantial and her decisions to have stronger consequences. Even with that frustration, I cared about these characters enough that I wanted to see them work everything out, and the ending left me curious about where the larger Elthika story is headed next. This is a series I will definitely continue.
