Audiobook Review: Haunted Love by Sheridan Anne. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Losing your virginity is a big deal. Voluntarily offering it up on a silver platter at an exclusive sex club… that’s just messed up.

It was dark, and in my defense, he was tall, muscled, and smelled like the most tempting sin.

I couldn’t resist, and the second he touched me, I knew I was never going to be the same. It was a night filled with the kind of intensity a woman could only ever dream of. Nothing could have tainted such perfectness. At least, that’s what I thought.

Because the delicious man I let rail me into oblivion isn’t the perfect stranger I thought he was. No, he’s anything but. The man who growled desperate filthy words in my ear and made my skin shiver with desire is a man I’ve known and craved all my life.

My brother’s best friend.

Izaac Banks has been off-limits since the beginning of time, going out of his way to make sure I know he’s unattainable. Despite my brother’s objections, I love him. I always have, and now that I’ve had a taste of the sweetest forbidden fruit… There’s no turning back.

I need more, and there’s only one way to get it—I’m going to offer him an ultimatum he simply can’t refuse.

Main Characters and Plot Overview

Aspen Ryder has been carrying a torch for her brother Austin’s best friend, Izaac Banks, for years. Izaac is older, successful, and firmly off-limits because Austin has made it very clear that his best friend is not supposed to touch his little sister. Aspen finally decides she’s done playing it safe and heads to an exclusive sex club with her best friend Becs, determined to lose her virginity to a stranger. The twist is that the man she ends up with in the dark is Izaac.

I actually loved the setup because Aspen goes into that encounter expecting it to be a one-time experience, only to discover afterward that the man she has wanted for years was right there. Izaac is just as shaken by the discovery. He knows being with Aspen crosses a line with Austin, so when they decide to continue seeing each other, he insists that their arrangement is only about sex and repeatedly tells Aspen that he will never fall in love with her.

Of course, Aspen is already emotionally invested, which creates most of the tension between them. Watching her try to convince herself that she can handle Izaac’s rules while wanting something much deeper made me alternately root for her and want to shake her.

Highlights and Limitations

The secret relationship was definitely my favorite part. Once Aspen and Izaac start sneaking around, there is a constant push and pull because they know Austin would lose his mind if he found out. I especially enjoyed the moments when Izaac’s actions contradicted what he kept saying. He could insist that this was only physical, but his jealousy and the way he reacted to Aspen made it increasingly obvious that his feelings were more complicated.

The chemistry between Aspen and Izaac is also extremely hot. The opening sex-club encounter immediately establishes why Aspen has such a hard time walking away from him, and their later encounters keep that intensity going.

Austin was a character I had a much harder time with. His reaction to Aspen and Izaac crossing his one rule becomes particularly ugly, especially considering his own relationship with Aspen’s best friend, Becs. I understood that he was protective of his sister, but some of his behavior made me frustrated rather than sympathetic.

My biggest issue was the amount of back-and-forth between Aspen and Izaac. I wanted Izaac to stop insisting that he could never love her and actually confront what he was feeling. There were also moments when Aspen’s reactions frustrated me because she would push for something, get what she asked for, and then become upset with the situation. That cycle happened enough that it started to wear on me. She was also a bit pathetic in how many years she had a crush on Izaac and she keeps going despite getting nothing from him.

Narration

Heather Firth and Walker Williams worked well as the voices of Aspen and Izaac. I particularly liked the contrast between Aspen’s emotional reactions and Izaac’s more controlled attitude, especially during the scenes where he was trying desperately to maintain the boundaries he had established.

Walker Williams brought the right amount of restraint to Izaac when he was fighting his attraction to Aspen, while Heather Firth captured Aspen’s vulnerability and determination. Their performances helped make the secret relationship feel more immediate, particularly during the scenes where the characters were trying to hide what was happening from Austin.

Final Thoughts

I went into Haunted Love expecting a forbidden brother’s-best-friend romance, and that is exactly what I got, with plenty of steam layered over the secrecy and emotional complications. The premise hooked me immediately, and I was invested in seeing whether Aspen and Izaac could actually make a relationship work when Austin’s disapproval was hanging over them.

I did find myself frustrated with the repeated emotional tug-of-war, especially when Izaac kept denying feelings that seemed increasingly obvious. Still, I cared enough about Aspen and Izaac that I wanted to see them get through all the obstacles, and the chemistry between them kept me listening.

For me, this worked best when the story focused on Aspen and Izaac’s forbidden relationship, their undeniable attraction, and the consequences of finally crossing a boundary that had been in place for years. It is a very spicy, secret-romance story with plenty of angst, and the audiobook performances made the relationship easy to get caught up in.
