Soh’fee arrives at the site of this new Er’then city, at the same time that I sense a disturbance that will change our paths forever.
Small, unsuspecting hyu’man, she comes along with me on a journey that brings horror, violence and chill into her world.

This little hyu’man has come to mean more to me than she should. Soh’fee has become my world in this place, fueling hope I’d thought lost.
She gives me a reason to stay and fight. And I discover my true purpose lies not in destruction, but in fiercely protecting what has been reborn from the ashes…
This new world, and Soh’fee who has become my own.

Main Characters and Plot Overview
He’rox has been one of the more mysterious Vullan throughout the Captured Earth series, so I was very ready to finally get his story. He is the Vullan medic and scientist who sacrificed himself through experimentation in an attempt to help defeat the Gryken. Those experiments left him physically different from his fellow Vullan, including his unusual white ba’clan and other characteristics that have made him feel increasingly separated from his own people. Now that the war is supposedly over and Unity is rebuilding, He’rox finds himself wondering what purpose he has left.
Then Sophie arrives. She is an epidemiologist who grew up prepared for disaster because of her doomsday-prepper father, and her scientific background makes her a natural choice to work with He’rox. I liked that she isn’t immediately frightened by how different he looks. Instead, she is curious about him, and that curiosity becomes important because He’rox has spent so much time believing there is something fundamentally wrong with him.
Their investigation takes them away from the relative safety of Unity and into a much darker problem left behind by the Gryken. The parasitic veins spreading beneath the ground and the infected humans they encounter gave this book a genuinely creepy horror element. I especially liked how He’rox’s strange connection to the threat becomes part of the mystery surrounding him. There are also some brutal moments where the danger becomes very personal, particularly when Sophie is threatened and He’rox’s carefully controlled nature starts to crack.
Highlights and Limitations
The biggest highlight for me was finally understanding He’rox. His sacrifice and the consequences of what he did to himself gave so much more meaning to the character I’d been watching throughout the earlier books. He isn’t simply the quiet, strange medic. He has been carrying an enormous amount of guilt and isolation, and watching Sophie refuse to treat him like a monster was one of my favorite parts of their relationship.
I also loved seeing how fiercely protective He’rox becomes once Sophie is truly his. There is a point where he is willing to turn against his own Vullankin if that’s what it takes to protect her, and that was exactly the kind of possessive alien hero moment I was hoping to get from him.
Sophie was more complicated for me. I liked her intelligence and compassion, especially because she is willing to work alongside He’rox rather than simply relying on him to solve everything. At the same time, some of her decisions had me wanting to yell at my audiobook. She repeatedly puts herself in situations where the danger is obvious, and while I understand that her medical background makes her want to help, there were moments when I wished she had exercised a little more self-preservation.
I also thought the romance moved faster than I would have preferred. I understood the attraction, but I wanted more time watching these two scientists work together before their emotional connection became so intense. Their relationship eventually won me over, especially once He’rox’s fear of losing her became impossible for him to hide.
Narration
Macie Miller and C.J. Grey worked well together for this story. Miller gave Sophie the intelligence, determination, and emotional vulnerability she needed, while Grey captured He’rox’s more restrained and alien personality particularly well. I enjoyed hearing the gradual change in He’rox as he went from emotionally detached and convinced that he had no future to someone desperately determined to protect the woman who had given him a reason to stay.
The narration also handled the darker material effectively. The scenes involving the infected humans and the parasitic threat needed a certain amount of tension and unease, and the performances helped make those moments feel appropriately disturbing. The audiobook runs just under ten hours, and I thought the pacing worked particularly well during the more dangerous sections.
Final Thoughts
Rebirth gave me the He’rox story I had been waiting for, and learning what had actually happened to him was probably my favorite part of the entire book. I went into this expecting his physical differences to be explained, but I wasn’t expecting the emotional weight behind them or how much his story would revolve around his search for a reason to keep living after the war.
I did have some frustrations with Sophie and wished the romance had been given more room to develop, but the combination of alien romance, creepy post-apocalyptic horror, scientific mystery, and He’rox’s fiercely protective nature kept me invested. The moments when he believes Sophie is lost and the lengths he is willing to go to save her really got to me.
As the conclusion to Captured Earth, this felt like a fitting final chapter because the story isn’t only about surviving the invasion. It’s about what happens when the fighting stops and the survivors have to figure out who they are afterward. For He’rox, Sophie becomes part of that answer, and watching this damaged, isolated alien discover that he is still capable of love and belonging was ultimately what made the audiobook work for me.
