A modern-day pirate.
An heiress lost at sea.
And the treasure of a lifetime.

He’s beautiful. Calculating. Cruel. And he’s taken me hostage.

When pirates board my boyfriend’s yacht, I jump overboard to save myself. Drifting asea. Until one man rescues me from the endless ocean.

Except he has plans of his own. I’m worth too much money for ransom. He’ll keep me on his ship and in his bed. The real danger lies in his dark-depth eyes. He wants more from me than money. Than passion. He wants everything.

He rescued me, but I’m far from safe.

There’s an entire sea of danger threatening to drag me under.

Characters and Plot Summary

Ashley Donnelly is a wealthy heiress whose privileged life doesn’t protect her from tragedy. When she’s aboard a yacht with her boyfriend, Robbie, everything takes a terrifying turn after dangerous men arrive and kill him. Faced with the same kind of danger that has already marked her family history, Ashley makes a desperate decision to jump into the ocean, even though she can’t swim. It’s a desperate gamble, but staying on the yacht could mean certain death.

Enter Poseidon, a mysterious, ruthless sea captain whose connection to the ocean seems almost instinctive. He rescues Ashley from the water, bringing her aboard his ship and helping her recover. For a brief moment, it looks as though she’s finally safe. Then she discovers that Poseidon has recognized her identity and sees an opportunity to use her wealthy father for ransom. Her rescuer becomes her captor, and Ashley quickly realizes that surviving the ocean was only the beginning of her problems.

What makes their relationship so complicated is that the attraction between them develops alongside the danger. Ashley refuses to quietly accept her captivity, and Poseidon is both fascinated by her and determined to maintain control. When she attempts to escape by taking supplies and jumping into the dark water again, he follows her, and their confrontation turns into a charged, intimate encounter. I liked that Ashley continued to fight for her freedom, even when her attraction to Poseidon made everything more confusing. He’s a man who seems far more comfortable commanding a ship and controlling his surroundings than dealing with feelings he can’t easily manage.

Highlights and Limitations

The strongest element for me was the combination of ocean adventure, dark romance, and the constant uncertainty surrounding Poseidon’s intentions. The opening yacht attack immediately puts Ashley in a life-or-death situation, and her jump into the sea is a genuinely desperate moment. I could understand why she would take that risk rather than wait to discover what the attackers planned to do with her.

I also enjoyed the contrast between Poseidon’s competence as a captain and his deeply controlling behavior toward Ashley. He can rescue a stranger from the ocean and tend to her physical needs, yet he also decides to hold her for ransom. That contradiction makes him compelling, even when his choices are infuriating. The scene in which Ashley tries to escape by sea particularly captures their dynamic. She’s determined not to surrender her freedom, while Poseidon seems to find her defiance just as captivating as he finds her physically attractive.

However, the romance won’t work for everyone. Poseidon’s behavior crosses well beyond ordinary possessiveness, and the captivity element makes the power imbalance impossible to ignore. His decision to restrain Ashley after her escape attempt reinforces that this isn’t a conventional romance built on trust and equal footing. I enjoy a dark, morally complicated hero, but I wanted more moments where Ashley’s emotional responses and personal boundaries received as much attention as the intense physical chemistry. The attraction is easy to see, but attraction alone doesn’t resolve the troubling aspects of their situation.

The story also leaves plenty of unresolved tension, particularly around Poseidon’s past and the reasons he’s become such a ruthless man. That adds intrigue, but it means readers looking for a complete romantic resolution should expect to continue the trilogy.

Narration

Heather Firth and Tor Thom are well suited to this audiobook’s dark, high-intensity atmosphere. Firth brings Ashley’s fear and vulnerability to the forefront, especially after Robbie’s murder and during her desperate attempts to escape. Ashley needs to sound frightened without losing her determination, and that balance is important to making her more than a helpless captive.

Tor Thom fits Poseidon’s intimidating presence, giving the captain the commanding quality his character demands. His performance suits the contrast between Poseidon’s controlled exterior and the more volatile emotions beneath it. Together, the narrators help distinguish Ashley’s struggle for independence from Poseidon’s need for control, while keeping the romantic tension prominent. Their performances make the confrontations and intimate exchanges engaging in audio.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I found this an entertaining, dramatic start to a dark romance trilogy. Ashley’s determination to survive and Poseidon’s dangerous mix of protectiveness, ruthlessness, and desire kept me interested, even when I didn’t approve of his behavior. I especially appreciated that Ashley wasn’t content to accept her circumstances, and her repeated efforts to escape gave the story momentum beyond the romance.

This is definitely a book for readers who enjoy morally gray heroes, captivity themes, possessive behavior, and intense chemistry rather than a gentle, healthy relationship from the start. Poseidon can be infuriating, and some of his choices made me want Ashley to get as far away from him as possible. Yet the tension between them kept me curious about what would happen next. I’m interested enough to continue the series, particularly because I want to understand more about Poseidon’s past and see where Ashley’s complicated relationship with him leads.
