Rules of the Game by Jessa Wilder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
He’s the star hockey player, my brother’s best friend, and the boy I’ve been in love with since I was 7.
The problem? He wants nothing to do with me.
Then why does he sneak into my room when I have a nightmare? Get jealous when I go on a date? And has a tattoo of my birthday on his ribs?
Lucas Knight’s a lot of things. He’s possessive, jealous and overprotective. And he just might be in love with me.
Angst-filled, heartbreaking, and kick-your-feet-in-the-air-giddy-inducing.
This is a standalone book in the Rule Breaker interconnected series.

Characters, Backgrounds, and Plot Summary
J. Wilder’s Rules of the Game is an emotional second chance sports romance packed with heartbreak, longing, grief, and healing. The story centers on Piper and Lucas, two people whose lives became intertwined long before either of them was ready to admit what they meant to one another. With a foundation built on years of friendship, secret feelings, and shared trauma, this audiobook delivers a deeply emotional love story that hits especially hard in audio format.
Piper’s childhood was shaped by tragedy after her family lost their home in a devastating fire. The trauma of that night never truly left her, especially because she often relived it through terrifying nightmares. When her family moved next door to Lucas and his family, the two formed a quiet but powerful connection. Lucas, who quickly became best friends with Piper’s older brother Markus, was technically off-limits thanks to one strict rule from her brother: stay away from his sister. Of course, emotions rarely care about rules.
Some of the most touching moments in the novel come from those late nights when Lucas hears Piper crying out from her nightmares and climbs through her bedroom window simply to comfort her. Those scenes establish the emotional intimacy between them long before romance officially enters the picture. Piper has loved Lucas for years, and Lucas clearly loves her just as deeply, even when both of them try to deny it.
Their relationship finally changes the night Lucas and his friends are drafted, creating a moment that feels both triumphant and doomed from the start. Once Piper’s brother discovers the truth, events spiral into tragedy, leaving Lucas and Piper separated by grief, guilt, and devastating loss. The second half of the story becomes an emotional journey about forgiveness, healing, and finding their way back to each other after life tears them apart.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the audiobook’s greatest strengths is how emotionally grounded the romance feels. This is not simply a sports romance about chemistry and attraction. It is a story about surviving trauma, carrying grief, and learning how to love after immense pain. Piper and Lucas both feel layered and believable, and their emotional history gives every interaction extra weight. The slow burn yearning between them is incredibly effective because the listener understands how long these feelings have existed.
The emotional scenes are where the book shines brightest. J. Wilder does an excellent job portraying the lingering effects of tragedy and the complicated emotions surrounding loss. The romance feels earned because neither character can simply move on overnight. Their reconciliation takes time, honesty, and vulnerability.
That said, the book can feel very heavy emotionally for extended stretches. Listeners looking for a lighter sports romance may find the grief-centered storyline more intense than expected. Some of the conflict also leans heavily on miscommunication and emotional avoidance, which may frustrate listeners who prefer more direct communication between romantic leads. However, for listeners who enjoy emotionally charged second chance romances, those elements will likely feel fitting for the story being told.
The Narration
The narration is outstanding, particularly Corvin King’s performance as Lucas. His voice has an incredible warmth and emotional depth that perfectly captures Lucas’ protective nature and heartbreak. King excels during the quieter emotional moments, especially scenes involving grief, regret, and vulnerability. His performance gives Lucas a tenderness that makes the character even more compelling. There is a sincerity to his delivery that makes the emotional scenes hit especially hard.
Lila Winters also delivers a strong performance as Piper. She captures Piper’s emotional fragility, strength, and longing very well, particularly during scenes connected to Piper’s trauma and heartbreak. Together, the narrators create excellent chemistry and fully immerse the listener in the emotional intensity of the story.
Final Opinion
Overall, Rules of the Game is a heartfelt and emotionally consuming romance about love that survives grief, mistakes, and time apart. Piper and Lucas are easy characters to root for because their connection feels genuine from the very beginning. Combined with the exceptional narration, especially Corvin King’s unforgettable performance, this audiobook delivers a powerful emotional experience that fans of angsty second chance sports romance will likely devour.
