Corruptor’s Claim by K. Loraine and Meg Anne
I’m in love with my brother’s wife.
Corrupter’s Claim
When River came back, I thought I’d gotten a second chance to make her mine. I had Mama’s ring ready and everything. Until the moment I found out she was already married–to Cross.
On paper, it’s a good thing, especially since the head of the Russian Bratva has her in his sights. The last thing I want is Dominik Volkov to make her a pawn in his twisted game of revenge.
Having our name should be enough, but even if it’s not, River should be safe with three strong protectors ready to die for her.
Me.
Cross.
And Bishop, the mysterious ex Navy SEAL working for us.
Unfortunately River doesn’t trust us. For good reason, we’re not the Southern gentlemen we’re pretending to be. And pretty soon she’ll figure it out.
She owns the ranch thanks to my father, but the deeper she digs into our books, the more of our secrets she reveals. It’s only a matter of time before she runs.
And I can’t lose her again, even if it means letting Cross keep her.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary
Corruptor’s Claim picks up immediately after the massive revelation at the end of book one. River Adams discovers that she is already legally married to Daniel Cross Jr., a secret that completely reshapes the dynamic between her, Cross, Walker Cross, and Sterling Bishop. River is still trying to understand her place at Twisted Cross Ranch while also digging into the suspicious financial records and hidden operations connected to the ranch.
Cross remains torn between his lingering guilt over how he treated River years ago and his desire to protect her from the growing threat surrounding the family. Walker wears his heart on his sleeve more than the others, and his feelings for River become increasingly difficult to hide as the situation grows more dangerous. Bishop continues to be the most mysterious member of the group. As a former Navy SEAL and trusted ranch hand, he operates with quiet competence, but this book starts peeling back layers of his past and his loyalties.
The central conflict revolves around the Russian Bratva’s interest in River and the dangerous secrets hidden within the Cross family’s business dealings. While River searches for answers about her parents and the ranch, the men struggle to balance protecting her with being honest about their own secrets. The romance deepens considerably as the why choose relationship becomes more established, but the suspense storyline remains just as important. By the end, the stakes are significantly higher, leading to a devastating cliffhanger.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the strongest aspects of this installment is how much deeper the emotional relationships become. The reveal that River is already married to Cross could have felt like a cheap plot twist, but instead it forces difficult conversations and exposes years of unresolved pain. The flashbacks involving River and Cross help explain why their relationship remains so emotionally charged. Their scenes carry genuine heartbreak rather than relying solely on physical attraction.
Bishop easily steals many of the best moments in the book. His protective instincts feel earned because he consistently shows up when River needs him instead of simply making promises. His growing connection with River is built through trust, which makes their scenes especially satisfying.
Walker also shines, particularly during some unexpectedly funny moments. His scenes while recovering from injuries and dealing with medication provide much needed comic relief in an otherwise dark story. The humor never feels forced and helps balance the heavier mafia elements.
The suspense plot is another strength. River’s investigation into the ranch finances, the escalating threats from the Bratva, and the mystery surrounding her parents all keep the story moving. The authors do a good job intertwining romance and danger so neither element overwhelms the other.
My main limitation is that the book ends on such an abrupt and painful cliffhanger that some readers may find it frustrating. While the ending is effective emotionally, it leaves several major storylines unresolved. There are also moments where the number of secrets being withheld by nearly every character starts to feel excessive. Miscommunication remains a significant source of conflict throughout the story.
Narration
The audiobook cast continues to be one of the series’ greatest strengths. Stella Hunter gives River a strong emotional range, capturing both her vulnerability and determination. River spends much of this book questioning everything she thought she knew, and Hunter makes those emotional shifts believable.
Jason Clarke delivers some of his best work as Cross. He effectively conveys the character’s regret and longing, particularly during scenes involving memories from River’s past. Cross can be difficult to sympathize with at times, but Clarke helps humanize him.
Aaron Shedlock brings excellent energy to Walker. His performance highlights Walker’s humor, emotional openness, and frustration without turning him into comic relief alone.
J.F. Harding’s portrayal of Bishop is outstanding. His deeper voice fits the character’s protective and commanding nature perfectly. As Bishop’s role expands, Harding gives him enough emotional depth to make him more than just the strong silent type.
The duet style narration keeps conversations flowing naturally and adds intensity to both the romantic and suspenseful scenes.
Final Opinion
Corruptor’s Claim successfully avoids the middle book slump that often affects trilogies. Instead of simply bridging the gap between the first and final installments, it expands the characters, deepens the relationships, and raises the stakes considerably. River’s growing trust in Cross, Walker, and Bishop feels earned because each relationship develops differently.
The combination of dark cowboy romance, family secrets, mafia intrigue, and emotional angst creates an addictive listening experience. While the brutal cliffhanger may leave listeners emotionally wrecked, it also makes it nearly impossible not to immediately start the next book.
For listeners who enjoyed Sinner’s Secret, this sequel delivers more romance, more danger, stronger character development, and some truly memorable audiobook performances. If there is anything that I can say about K. Loraine and Meg Anne is that they are awesome at writing characters that you would love to have in your life. The book boyfriends are all alpha male and dominant, funny, protective and sexy, the kind of guys you just want to sleep with their arms around you.
