Oliver
I don’t usually trap women with amnesia into marriage.
But I guess there’s a first time for everything.
When the woman of my dreams falls into my lap, I can’t help but wonder what else she can do in that position.
She’s here. In my house. At my mercy.
And she thinks we’ve been lovers the entire decade we spent apart.
Briar and I have always been unfinished business.
Now it’s time to seal the deal.Briar
I’m marrying a beautiful monster.
A crooked fraud. America’s wealthiest bachelor.
He claims we’re in love, yet all I taste in our kisses is hate and lust.
I don’t remember why or how.
But I do remember he’s the enemy.
Now, I’m stuck inside a nightmare.
And Oliver will do anything to keep me in the dark.

My Dark Prince by L.J. Shen and Parker S. Huntington is a dark and emotionally layered retelling of Sleeping Beauty, trading in magic and innocence for guilt, secrets, and a love story shaped by years of separation and unresolved pain.
Characters & Backgrounds
Oliver Von Bismarck, the hidden force behind The Grand Regent hotel empire, is a man living behind a carefully crafted mask. To the public, he is a reckless playboy, a lush, and a tabloid favorite who thrives on scandal. Beneath that persona, however, lies a deeply burdened individual carrying guilt from a past mistake that continues to haunt him. His avoidance of Briar for fifteen years speaks to the weight of that secret, and his self-destructive reputation feels less like indulgence and more like punishment.
Briar “Rose” Auer is a strong and quietly resilient heroine whose life has been shaped by rejection and betrayal. Raised by parents who never truly loved her, she eventually learns the devastating truth about her biological father and the reasons behind her upbringing. Rather than breaking her, these experiences sharpen her independence. As an adult, she has built a career as an intimacy coordinator, a role that subtly reflects her need for control and boundaries in a world that once denied her both.
Together, Oliver and Briar share a past filled with innocence that was abruptly shattered, leaving behind unresolved emotions and lingering wounds that neither has been able to escape.
Plot Summary
The story moves between past and present, showing the deep bond Oliver and Briar once shared during childhood summers and the moment everything changed. The revelation about Briar’s parentage and the events surrounding it create a fracture inside Briar and though she still sees Ollie for the next few summers, but is afraid that he won’t continue to love her like he used to since even her own parents can’t find it within themselves to love he.r
Fifteen years later, fate forces them back into each other’s orbit when Briar is working on a film being shot at one of the Grand Regent hotels. Their reunion is anything but smooth. Oliver is desperate to confront the past, while Briar refuses to reopen old wounds. The tension between them is immediate and charged, built on years of unanswered questions and emotional scars.
A turning point comes when Briar is injured and falls into a pond, forcing Oliver into action. His frantic attempt to save her strips away his carefully maintained façade and reveals the depth of his feelings and guilt. From there, the story unfolds as a slow unraveling of secrets, pushing both characters to confront what happened all those years ago and whether redemption and forgiveness are possible.
Highlights & Low Points
One of the strongest aspects of My Dark Prince is its emotional intensity. The authors excel at building a palpable sense of longing and tension between Oliver and Briar. Their shared history adds weight to every interaction, making even small moments feel significant. When Briar awakens in the hospital she can’t remember the last fifteen years, but the last thing she remembers was Oliver telling her he loved her when she was sixteen and the fact that he is in her life currently, she assumes that they have been together all along.
Oliver’s character stands out for his complexity. His public persona contrasted with his private reality creates a compelling internal conflict, and his guilt-driven behavior adds depth to his actions. Briar, meanwhile, is a grounded and capable heroine whose strength lies in her restraint and self-respect. Oliver’s neighbors and best friends were awesome and one of the best parts of this book.
The atmosphere is another highlight. The luxurious hotel and mansion settings contrast beautifully with the darker emotional undertones, reinforcing the idea that appearances can be deceiving. I also usually hate books where either of the main characters is a virgin, but in this case, I loved the flashback scene to the first time they made love, when they were both virgins. It was surprisingly sweet and genuine, and I loved how they joked afterwards.
On the downside, the pacing can feel uneven at times, particularly in the middle where the push and pull between the characters occasionally drags. Some readers may also find Oliver’s secrecy frustrating, especially when it prolongs misunderstandings that could have been addressed sooner. Additionally, the heavy emotional themes and morally gray behavior may not appeal to those looking for a lighter or more traditional romance.
Narration (Christian Fox & Andi Arndt)
The audiobook narration by Christian Fox and Andi Arndt adds another layer of depth to the story.
Christian Fox delivers Oliver’s character with a compelling mix of arrogance and vulnerability. His performance captures both the polished public image and the underlying torment, making Oliver’s internal struggle feel authentic and engaging.
Andi Arndt brings Briar to life with emotional nuance and strength. She balances Briar’s vulnerability with her resilience, ensuring that the character never feels weak despite everything she has endured.
Together, their performances enhance the chemistry between the characters and elevate the emotional stakes of the story.
Final Thoughts
My Dark Prince is a haunting and emotionally driven retelling of Sleeping Beauty that leans heavily into themes of guilt, identity, and second chances. It replaces the traditional notion of a cursed sleep with emotional paralysis, where both characters are stuck in the past until they confront it.
While it may not be for every reader due to its darker tone and complex characters, fans of angsty, character-driven romance will find it deeply compelling. This is a story about facing the truth, no matter how painful, and discovering whether love can survive the weight of long-buried secrets.
