Audiobook Review: Tempest (Elemental Mates, #4) by Miranda Bridges and Kyra Snow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I’m in my birthday suit, but I’m not ready to party.

When I wake up on a strange planet, my first thought is not to go streaking. Actually, it’s to find some clothes and avoid the local natives.

Too bad they find me first.

Instead of probing me like a normal alien, they make me their prized possession. Yay, right? Nope. Turns out they have intentions for me that are not conducive to my plan to live long and prosper. So I run like Forrest Gump.

And smack right into another alien.

Except this one is hot. Like fuego. However, he’s not interested in me at all. I take much umbrage and decide to seduce him to scratch an itch, as well as stay close to him so I don’t die. I like sex, but I like breathing more. Just a little.

Anyway, the warrior is as welcoming as a cactus, but I can sense what he’s trying to hide and it draws me to him. Will I be able to keep from probing him emotionally without getting in too deep myself? (Sexual pun intended) Only one way to find out….

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Zoey has absolutely no intention of becoming anybody’s helpless captive. After being abducted from Earth and sold, she wakes up stranded on a strange planet with no clothes, no idea where she is, and some very unfriendly locals who decide she should be their prized possession. When she discovers that the frog-like inhabitants intend to sacrifice her to an active volcano, she does what any sensible woman would do: she runs for her life. Unfortunately for her, her escape leads her straight into Kai.

Kai is a Stormblood warrior and commander who has plenty of reasons to keep his emotions locked down. Having lost someone he cared about, he isn’t particularly interested in finding another mate, even though his people desperately need compatible partners to survive. He’s also on a mission to find Lady Navana, the wife of his adoptive father, Elder Xennith. Rescuing Zoey is one thing, but discovering that their connection might be something far more significant complicates everything.

Zoey’s quick wit and refusal to surrender make her a fascinating challenge for the stern, emotionally guarded Kai. She isn’t content to accept his cold attitude at face value, and her determination to get under his skin gradually exposes the pain and vulnerability he tries to conceal. Meanwhile, the search for Navana uncovers a much more sinister situation involving betrayal, the destruction of the Koraxian females, and Xennith’s hunger for power. Suddenly, Kai has far more to question than his unexpected attraction to a human woman.

Highlights and Limitations

Zoey was easily one of my favorite parts of this story. She’s thrown into an absolutely terrifying situation, yet she still manages to hold on to her humor and stubbornness. Her escape from the would-be sacrificers is a particularly memorable moment because it establishes that she’s determined to save herself rather than sit around waiting for someone else to do it. I also enjoyed her playful confidence around Kai. Calling herself the real Storm is exactly the kind of cheeky attitude that makes her fun to follow.

Kai’s internal conflict gives the romance more substance than a straightforward attraction between a human and an alien warrior. He’s torn between his loyalty to Xennith, his assumptions about his own future, and the undeniable connection he feels with Zoey. I liked that his journey forces him to reconsider the people he trusts. The revelations about Xennith’s involvement in the destruction of the Koraxian females add a compelling layer of danger to what initially looks like a rescue mission.

The combination of alien biology, elemental abilities, fated mates, and interplanetary politics continues to make this series entertaining. The volcano sacrifice and the discovery of Navana also give the story some genuinely dramatic turns.

My biggest reservation was the pacing toward the end. There’s a lot happening, from the conspiracy surrounding Xennith to the danger posed by others aboard Kai’s ship, and I would have welcomed more time for the emotional consequences to settle. In particular, I wanted a little more room for Kai and Zoey to work through their doubts and for the major revelations to receive the weight they deserved. The conclusion felt quicker than I would have preferred after so much tension had been built.

The romance is also quite steamy, so readers looking for a slow-burn relationship with minimal explicit content may find this one more focused on physical chemistry than they want.

Narration

Heather Setzler and BJ Schraff bring the audiobook to life with their dual narration. The two-voice approach suits a story that alternates between a spirited human heroine and a warrior who keeps his feelings tightly controlled. Zoey’s humor and boldness are important to her characterization, while Kai’s perspective needs enough restraint to convey his reluctance to trust the connection developing between them.

I particularly appreciate that this kind of story depends on more than delivering the romantic scenes convincingly. The danger of Zoey’s predicament, Kai’s emotional resistance, and the growing suspicion surrounding Xennith all need to remain engaging between the intimate moments. The narration supports the audiobook’s blend of action, humor, and alien romance, making it an enjoyable way to experience the story.

Final Opinion

Tempest was an entertaining addition to the Elemental Mates series, and Zoey’s determination and cheeky personality made this installment stand out for me. I enjoyed watching her challenge Kai’s defenses and seeing his loyalty tested as the mission to find Navana revealed a much darker conspiracy than he expected.

I do wish the ending had slowed down enough to give the relationship and the major revelations more breathing room, but the mix of danger, steamy chemistry, elemental powers, and alien world-building kept me invested. If you enjoy stubborn heroines, grumpy alien warriors, fated mates, and romance wrapped in a larger science-fiction conflict, Kai and Zoey’s story is worth a listen.
