Audiobook ALC Review: Dragon Me Crazy (Possessive Monsters, #12) by Maggie Mayhem. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Single Dad Dragon Meets His Witchy Match
As a recently divorced grandmother, I buried my magic long ago and ask nothing of life but peace and quiet.

Then a single-dad dragon offers me a job as governess to his motherless dragonlet.

I agree to just one visit, no promises. But the moment I step into his castle, Emmett decides I’m his. He calls me his treasure. He touches me like he means to keep me. And the heat between us? As hot as the fire in his belly.

But secrets slither through these castle walls, and someone covets what Emmett guards most.

To save the dragonlet I’ve come to love, I’ll have to reclaim my magic and learn to trust the dragon who’s staked his claim on my heart. And I have to do it all before dragon fire burns it all to the ground.

Dragon me Crazy is a steamy paranormal monster romance featuring a divorced, older heroine, a possessive dragon, and tons of adventure and steam. While technically a standalone, it’s best enjoyed by those familiar with the Possessive Monster universe.

Main Characters and Plot Overview

Elana was one of the things I enjoyed most about this story because she is not the typical young, inexperienced heroine. She is an older witch, a mother and grandmother who has spent years recovering from a marriage where her powerful wizard ex-husband drained her magic and kept her afraid. Now that he is finally behind bars and Elana has her full power back, she is trying to figure out who she is when she is no longer living under someone else’s control. The problem is that after years of suppressing her abilities, controlling all that magic again is not exactly easy.

Emmett is Desmon’s dragon brother and a single father to little Mellie, an adorable dragonlet who is eight months old and still hasn’t shifted into human form. Since there is a real concern that she might never develop a human form if she doesn’t shift before she turns one, Emmett turns to Elana because of her experience raising magical children. Unfortunately, his first attempt at getting her help is not exactly smooth. He basically tells her she will be taking care of his boys, which immediately hits the wrong nerve for a woman who has spent far too much of her life being told what to do.

I loved watching their relationship change from that rocky beginning. Emmett is clearly fascinated by Elana, and when another man starts looking at her with obvious interest, his protective dragon instincts come roaring to the surface. What really worked for me was seeing Elana refuse to simply fall into his possessive embrace. She has to decide whether his attention represents another man trying to control her or something completely different. Meanwhile, the danger surrounding Emmett’s home turns what begins as Elana helping with Mellie into a much bigger threat involving hidden enemies, magic and the safety of the family they are beginning to build.

Highlights and Limitations

The biggest highlight for me was Elana reclaiming herself. I especially liked that her past trauma actually matters to the romance. When Emmett calls her his treasure and treats her as someone precious, there is an understandable part of Elana that wants to believe him, but another part is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Watching her slowly realize that Emmett wants her rather than her magic made their relationship much more satisfying.

Mellie was another absolute standout. I loved the scenes involving Elana and the little dragonlet, especially because their connection began before Mellie even hatched. The fact that Mellie trusts Elana gives the relationship with Emmett an added emotional layer rather than making the romance feel completely separate from the family story.

I also enjoyed seeing Emmett’s softer side. At first he comes across as cocky and determined to get what he wants, but his desperation over Mellie’s inability to shift shows how deeply he cares about his daughter. I thought that contrast worked particularly well.

My one preference would have been for a little more time devoted to some of the external threats. The danger involving the castle, the wizards and the people targeting what Emmett considers most precious kept things moving, but I occasionally wanted the suspense to breathe a little longer before the story returned to the romance.

Narration

Troy Duran and Dani Soleil were a great pairing for this audiobook. Dani gave Elana the maturity and underlying strength I wanted from her, particularly during the moments when Elana was struggling with the idea of trusting another powerful man. Troy brought the right combination of confidence and possessiveness to Emmett, while also letting his softer side come through when he was dealing with Mellie.

I especially liked the contrast between Emmett’s commanding dragon personality and the way his voice softened around his daughter. Those moments helped sell the idea that beneath all the possessive behavior, this man is completely devoted to his little dragonlet.

Final Thoughts

I had a lot of fun with this one. What surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the second-chance aspect of Elana’s story. Her romance with Emmett isn’t about someone rescuing a helpless woman. It is about a woman who has already survived the worst part and is learning that she can have power, independence and love at the same time.

The combination of an older heroine, a possessive dragon, a single-dad storyline, adorable dragonlet, magic, danger and plenty of steam worked really well for me. I also appreciated that Elana’s age was treated as something completely irrelevant to her desirability. Emmett wants her, openly and intensely, and I absolutely loved watching her finally believe she deserves that kind of attention.

This was a fun addition to the Possessive Monsters series, and Elana and Emmett gave me exactly the kind of paranormal romance where the family dynamics ended up being just as entertaining as the romance.
