Scorched Redemption: The Sendaxa Chronicles, Book 2 by Rebecca Hefner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Two broken souls collide as ominous threats emerge…

Arianna Lawson has one help her sister defeat the Sendaxa regime and live a solemn existence free from the chaos of their dystopian world. Life has taught her hard lessons about pain and loss, and she has no desire to open herself to love—even for the strong, stoic man who consumes her every thought.

Dominic Cavalleri has experienced his own loss, retreating behind false emotion to bury the pain. After sustaining a life-threatening injury, he’s determined to change his ways—and to explore the emotion he saw in Arianna’s gorgeous eyes when he was moments from death.

Thrust into a dangerous mission, the two soldiers work together as their passion ignites. But Arianna’s stubborn denial of her feelings is Dominic’s greatest foe, and he’ll stop at nothing to tear down her walls as they fight to restore balance.

Main Characters and Plot Overview

Scorched Redemption picks up a few weeks after Repressed Echoes, and I really appreciated that Arianna Lawson and Dominic Cavalleri were not strangers to me when their story became the focus. Their relationship had already been developing in the background of the first book, which is somewhat unusual for a series where each installment follows a different couple. Arianna has been quietly and irrevocably in love with Dominic, while Dominic believed his heart belonged to Arianna’s sister, Dani. That history makes their relationship much more complicated than a simple attraction between two people thrown together on a mission.

Arianna is tough, guarded, stubborn, and determined to keep her emotions under control. Her plan after the mission is surprisingly pragmatic. She intends to have a baby through artificial insemination and build a life on her own once they obtain the antidote and begin restoring the world. Dominic, meanwhile, is coming to terms with his own feelings after his near-death experience. Being sent on a dangerous mission with Arianna forces both of them to confront things they have been avoiding. As their mission unfolds, the danger from the Sendaxa regime continues to escalate, and the romance becomes tangled with the larger fight to reclaim their world. The story also brings some significant twists and revelations that kept me invested in what would happen next.

Highlights and Limitations

The biggest highlight for me was finally getting inside Arianna’s head. I liked her in the first book, but understanding just how deeply she had been carrying her feelings for Dominic made several of her earlier interactions with him take on a completely different meaning. I especially enjoyed watching Dominic realize that the woman he thought he understood was far more vulnerable beneath her hard exterior.

Their time alone on the mission worked particularly well because the danger forced them to stop avoiding each other. Dominic’s determination to get through Arianna’s emotional defenses created some excellent tension, especially because she was determined to stick to her carefully constructed plans for her future. I also liked that Dominic’s near-death experience genuinely affected his outlook rather than simply being used as an excuse to push the romance forward. His decision to stop hiding behind emotional distance gave their relationship another layer.

I did find Arianna’s continued denial frustrating at times, although I understood where it came from. I actually wished she had trusted Dominic with the truth a little sooner because so much of her emotional struggle came from assumptions about what he wanted. Still, that frustration made her eventual emotional growth more satisfying. Arianna could also be off-putting at times; she was a grump through much of the book and took her anger out on everyone around her which I didn’t like. I could definitely see why Dominic didn’t think of her in that way for so long. She comes off as someone who wants to do everything herself and she made it known.

The dystopian storyline also continues to move forward, with the resistance dealing with the Sendaxa regime, dangerous missions, secrets, and betrayals. I liked that the romance never completely erased the larger survival story, though I do have a problem with any book that uses the word turgid and this one did that in a steamy scene. There is a lot happening, and the ending definitely left me wanting the next installment.

Narration

Ri Paige and Curtis Michael Holland were a great fit for this audiobook. The duet narration made it easy to follow the multiple points of view, and both narrators gave the characters distinct personalities rather than making everyone sound interchangeable. Ri Paige captured Arianna’s guarded, tough exterior while still allowing her softer emotions to come through when Dominic managed to get past her defenses. Curtis Michael Holland gave Dominic the steady, protective quality I expected from him, while also bringing out the longing and emotional vulnerability underneath.

I particularly liked how their performances worked during the more emotionally charged scenes between Arianna and Dominic. Their voices helped sell the tension that had been building since the first book.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed Scorched Redemption even more than I expected to because Arianna and Dominic’s relationship had already been simmering throughout the first book. That made their romance feel like a continuation of something I had already been watching develop rather than a completely new relationship appearing out of nowhere.

What surprised me most was how much I ended up caring about Arianna’s future plans and her struggle to accept that the future she had carefully designed for herself might not be the future she actually wants. Dominic had to convince her that she did not have to settle for simply surviving, and that emotional journey was my favorite part of the book.

The combination of romance, action, dystopian intrigue, and continuing revelations kept me listening, and I definitely wanted to know what would happen next by the time I reached the ending. Since this is an ongoing trilogy, I would strongly recommend listening to Repressed Echoes first. Scorched Redemption builds directly on the events and relationships established there, and I think Arianna and Dominic’s story has much more impact when you already know what brought them to this point.
