Tribute: A Sci-Fi Alien Warrior Romance by Tana Stone
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
She gave herself to the aliens to save her friends. Now she’s pledged to be the Crestek warrior’s mate. But will the marriage of convenience become something more?
Tribute
Volunteering herself as tribute to the aliens was the only way Holly could ensure the safety of the rest of her bounty hunter crew. Problem is now she’s locked in the alien city and engaged to marry a guy she’s never even met. All she wanted to do was save her friends, so they could get off the sand planet. She never dreamed she’d end up as some huge alien’s mate. She’ll play along until she can find a way to escape, and then she’s gone, and he’ll be nothing but a memory. What could go wrong with this plan?
As one of the high-born Cresteks, he could have his pick of mates, but now he’s been told he must marry the alien female they took from the Dothvek barbarians. The flame-haired female may stir his desire, but she also seems to take pleasure in defying him. The last thing he wants is a stubborn mate who doesn’t even want to be bonded with him. He’ll go along with it for the sake of his family honor, but he has no intention of falling for her. Right?

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary
Tribute is the fourth book in Tana Stone’s Barbarians of the Sand Planet series, and it picks up with Holly after she voluntarily gives herself to the aliens to protect her bounty hunter crew. Holly is a space bounty hunter who is fiercely independent, sexually confident, and absolutely convinced she does not need a mate. Her plan is basically to cooperate until her friends can rescue her, then disappear back into her old life.
T’Kar, a high-born Crestek warrior and the Chancellor’s son, is dealing with an entirely different problem. He has no interest in simply becoming the obedient heir his father expects him to be. He has secretly been involved with the Crestek resistance and has developed empathic abilities that his people largely lost after moving into their city. When he is ordered to marry Holly, neither of them is particularly thrilled about it. Holly wants freedom, while T’Kar wants to protect her while also escaping the life his father has planned for him.
What really throws them both is how quickly the situation changes. T’Kar’s father pushes their bonding ceremony forward before Holly’s crew can rescue her, leaving these two virtual strangers married and trying to figure out what happens next. I especially enjoyed watching Holly’s certainty that she could keep this relationship completely casual start to crack as she realizes T’Karbis not the controlling Crestek she expected. Their escape from the city and dangerous journey across the planet gave the romance some much-needed momentum.
Highlights and Limitations
The biggest highlight for me was the contrast between Holly and T’Kar. Holly is constantly pushing boundaries, while T’Kar is much more patient and honorable than she expects. I liked the fact that he does not simply try to force Holly into accepting the role of his mate. Instead, he recognizes that she wants out and tries to find a way for both of them to get what they need.
Holly’s willingness to sacrifice herself for Max also gave her character more depth than her flirtatious behavior initially suggests. She may joke, tease, and insist she wants nothing serious, but when her friends are in danger, she puts herself on the line without hesitation. I also liked seeing T’Kar’s resistance against his father develop alongside the romance because his personal conflict was not just about getting the girl. He genuinely wanted a different future for himself and his people.
The desert journey brought some welcome action, including threats from the alien factions and the growing danger surrounding T’Kar’s rebellion. There are also some steamy moments, but I thought the emotional progression between them was more interesting than the physical attraction.
My biggest frustration was Holly’s determination to keep treating her relationship with T’Kar as temporary even after her feelings were obviously changing. There were moments when I wanted her to stop fighting what she clearly felt and actually communicate with him. I also thought some of the consequences surrounding the Crestek leadership and their escape could have been explored more fully. A few plot threads felt like they were left for the later books rather than completely resolved here. Those issues did not ruin the story for me, but I definitely noticed them.
Narration
Tristan Josiah and Sierra Grace narrate the audiobook, which runs just over five hours. I thought they worked well for this story, particularly because the audiobook switches between Holly’s very confident personality and T’Kar’s more controlled, serious nature.
Sierra Grace gave Holly the attitude I expected from a woman who is perfectly comfortable speaking her mind and refusing to be intimidated by a massive alien warrior. Tristan Josiah brought a calmer, more restrained quality to T’Kar that suited his character and made the contrast between them work. Their performances helped make the banter and romantic tension feel natural rather than overly dramatic.
Final Opinion
I had fun with Tribute. What I liked most was that the romance was built around two people who initially wanted completely different things. Holly thinks she is giving herself up temporarily to save her friends, while T’Kar is trying to escape the future his father has chosen for him. Neither expects the other person to become important.
The combination of alien culture, resistance politics, dangerous travel across the sand planet, forced marriage, and gradually developing feelings kept me listening. I especially enjoyed seeing T’Karbturn out to be so different from the Crestek warrior Holly expected. Their relationship was messy at times, but that actually made the emotional payoff more satisfying for me.
It is definitely a series I would recommend experiencing in order because Holly’s sacrifice and the situation surrounding her begin in the earlier books. The author’s own series description also positions Tribute as Book 4, with the story directly continuing the crew’s ongoing situation on the sand planet. For me, this was another entertaining installment in a series that knows exactly how to combine alien warriors, strong-willed women, action, and plenty of heat.
