Main Characters and Plot Overview

Deacon Black has spent years building Blackbridge Security after his military career and an ugly divorce from his high school sweetheart, Dani, the woman of his dreams whom he was married to for 6 years before she cheated on him over and ended. The last person he expects to hear from is Dani’s best friend, Annalise Grimaldi, a woman he has disliked since they were teenagers. When Annalise discovers Dani’s apartment destroyed, a dead man inside, and her friend missing, she has nowhere else to turn. That desperate phone call throws Deacon and Annalise together as they try to uncover what Dani became involved in and stay ahead of the dangerous people now targeting them.

I really enjoyed how the investigation constantly forced Deacon and Annalise to reevaluate everything they thought they knew about each other. Their old grudges slowly crumble as they spend more time together under stressful circumstances. One moment that stood out was watching Annalise adjust from her comfortable socialite lifestyle to being hidden away under Blackbridge Security’s protection. Those quieter scenes revealed that there was much more to her than Deacon had always assumed. On the flip side, seeing Deacon’s protective instincts take over whenever Annalise was threatened made it clear that his cold exterior was mostly self defense.

Highlights and Limitations

The mystery surrounding Dani kept me invested because every new clue seemed to make the situation even messier. Between the trashed condo, the blood diamonds, organized crime connections, and the constant danger, I never felt like the suspense disappeared for long. I also appreciated that Deacon and Annalise did not suddenly fall into each other’s arms. Their history gave their arguments real weight, and their chemistry built naturally through shared danger and reluctant trust.

One of my favorite surprises was Puff Daddy, the foul-mouthed African Grey parrot. Every appearance lightened the mood just enough without taking away from the suspense, and some of the bird’s perfectly timed comments genuinely made me laugh.

If I had one criticism, it would be that I wished Annalise had started standing up for herself a little earlier, especially where Dani was concerned. Watching how one sided that friendship had become was frustrating at times, although I did enjoy seeing Annalise finally recognize those unhealthy dynamics before the story ended. That character growth made the payoff much more satisfying.

Narration

Jacob Morgan was an excellent choice for Deacon. His voice captured the disciplined, no-nonsense personality while still letting the quieter emotional moments come through. Callie Dalton gave Annalise confidence, vulnerability, and enough determination that she never sounded like a helpless heroine. Together they made the banter feel authentic, especially during the early chapters when neither wanted to admit they had completely misjudged the other. The pacing of both performances also kept the investigation moving without rushing the emotional scenes.

Final Thoughts

This was a strong start to the Blackbridge Security series. It balanced romantic suspense, enemies to lovers’ tension, and an engaging mystery without letting one element completely overshadow the others. I came for the romance, but I stayed because I genuinely wanted to know what had happened to Dani and how Deacon and Annalise would untangle the increasingly dangerous situation. By the end, I was attached to the entire Blackbridge Security team and immediately wanted to continue with the next book to spend more time with this group.
