In the future : A united Earth, to deal with the problem of population control, divides its population into classes of citizen and non-gratis.

To be born a non-gratis means a life of little freedoms and the constant possibility of being assigned to work on a colony. Lacking citizenship, every aspect of their life is controlled from where they live down to marriage and childbearing regulations. The only possible escape from life as a non-gratis is to qualify for one of the limited slots available for entrance into the military. For most, however, it is the only life that they will ever know.

Charlie has prepared her whole life for the possibility that she could be shipped off to work in a colony, so when she is selected for part of the initialization phase colony laborers, she is determined to make the best out of a new life on a very different and hostile planet. Assigned as a labor assistant in the exploratory lab seems like a step up in the right direction for her. Caring for the wildlife specimens is far preferable to working as a laborer, preparing the first of the fields, or in any of the common industries.

That is, until a vaguely humanoid specimen is captured and brought in. The promise of death that clings to it is fulfilled when it breaks out from containment and she finds herself hostage to a being with a thirst for vengeance. Far away from the colony, Charlie is forced to carve out a new life for herself in a dangerous world, but will she be able to safeguard her heart from the biggest threat of them a male who is determined to claim all of her.

Characters & Plot Summary

One of the things that immediately drew me into this story was Charlie’s situation before the romance even begins. She is a non gratas on Earth, which means she has no citizenship, no rights, and no real future beyond being used as expendable labor. When she is selected to join the colony mission to Turongal, it is not an exciting opportunity so much as another assignment she has no choice but to accept. I appreciated that the book never lets you forget how deeply unfair her life has been.

Once the colony is established, Charlie is assigned to work in the exploratory labs caring for captured specimens. Everything changes when a large alien creature is brought in as a supposed animal. Charlie quickly realizes he is intelligent and sentient, despite the scientists refusing to acknowledge it. Watching her quietly risk everything to help Rhyst escape was one of my favorite parts of the book because it perfectly showed the kind of person she is. She has almost no power, yet she still refuses to stand by while someone innocent is abused.

Of course, things do not go according to plan. Rhyst escapes, but Charlie ends up leaving the colony with him and suddenly finds herself seeing the conflict from the opposite side. As Rhyst introduces her to the Tak’sinii people, the story becomes much bigger than a romance. The mystery surrounding the planet, the history between humans and the Tak’sinii, and the disturbing discoveries about what the colony leaders are actually planning kept me invested right to the end.

Highlights & Limitations

The biggest strength of this book is easily the world building. I loved discovering Turongal alongside Charlie because neither she nor the reader is given easy answers. At first I felt almost as confused as Charlie when unfamiliar customs, alien terminology, and strange biology were introduced, but everything gradually came together in a way that made the discoveries feel rewarding rather than overwhelming.

Rhyst also stood out because he truly feels alien. He is an A’sankh, a genetically altered guardian who sacrificed his own chance at an ordinary life to protect his people. Learning why he believes he can never have a mate made several quiet conversations between him and Charlie surprisingly emotional. Their relationship develops through trust, shared danger, and mutual respect instead of instant attraction, which fit both characters well.

If I had one criticism, it would be that I wanted even more time exploring Tak’sinii society after Charlie leaves the colony. Those chapters were some of the most interesting in the book, and I would have happily traded a little romance for more exploration of their culture and history. I also thought the romance occasionally progressed a bit faster than I expected considering how cautious both characters had been up to that point.

Narration & Performance

Tess Irondale gave a performance that kept me engaged throughout the audiobook. Charlie’s determination and compassion came through naturally, especially during the scenes where she argues that Rhyst should not be treated like an animal. Rhyst’s quieter, more reserved personality was also well portrayed, and I never had trouble following the conversations despite the unfamiliar names and terminology. The narration helped smooth out the early learning curve of the world building and made it easier to settle into the story.

Final Opinion

This ended up being much more than an alien romance. It is also a story about prejudice, survival, and questioning the assumptions people make about those they see as different. My favorite moment was still Charlie deciding to help Rhyst escape even though she knew it could cost her everything. That single decision defines her character and sets the entire adventure in motion.

If you enjoy science fiction romances where the alien hero actually feels alien, the heroine earns your respect through courage instead of special abilities, and the romance grows alongside an engaging first contact mystery, I think this audiobook is well worth picking up. I finished it excited to see where the series goes next.
