Pirate’s Gold by S.J. Sanders
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
With Earth far behind her, Terri is certain that space is the answer to every desire she’s ever had for an adventure…until she realized just what being mated to an overprotective, territorial male meant. One small incident and Veral has kept her hidden away in the safety of their ship. For the months that they have been traveling to their salvage operation therefore has been a very long, boring trip, that is suddenly made a lot more interesting when they find themselves at the mercy of space pirates who are also in search of the ship. Life is suddenly becoming a lot more adventurous than what she asked for!
Pirate’s Gold
Veral does not trust any male anywhere near his mate. As a species unheard of in space, she is exotic which makes her desirable to many males, and he will not risk her for anyone. When space pirates hold her hostage to ensure his cooperation, he is determined to stall for time to give an unlikely source of help time to arrive. Discovering that the lost ship, Evandra has dangerous secrets makes the situation all the more complicated than he anticipated. With a world fraught with dangers, Veral is certain of one thing—Nothing will come between an Argurma and his mate.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary
Terri begins this second installment with Earth far behind her and a fierce determination to embrace the adventure she always dreamed space would offer. What she did not anticipate was how different life would feel with Veral’monushava’skahalur as her mate. Veral is an Argurma cyborg salvager, intensely territorial and protective, and early in the book his reaction to a single incident leads him to keep Terri tucked away inside their ship for months while they travel toward their next salvage site. That stretch of isolation sets the emotional tone for the story. Terri wants partnership and exploration. Veral wants safety and control.
When they finally reach their salvage operation, things shift quickly. The “boring trip” Terri complains about in the opening chapters is replaced by danger, unexpected discoveries, and the kind of chaos that seems to follow Veral wherever he goes. Terri’s frustration becomes a catalyst for several key moments, including one scene where she pushes back against Veral’s overprotectiveness and insists on being part of the work rather than a passenger.
There is also a great scene where Terri gets some cravings and finds some food that she likes from the replicator. When Veral tells her where the meat actually comes from, she isn’t so hot to finish her meal. Their dynamic is tested again when their salvage mission turns out to be far more complicated than expected, pulling them into conflict with outside forces and forcing Terri to rely on instincts she didn’t know she had.
Highlights and Limitations
Highlights
• Terri’s growth is genuinely satisfying. One of my favorite moments is when she finally calls Veral out for treating her like fragile cargo. It is a small scene, but it changes the emotional temperature of the story. She stops being reactive and starts asserting what she wants from their relationship and their life in space.
• The salvage mission adds real tension. the book picks up once Terri and Veral reach their destination, and I agree. The shift from confinement to active danger makes the second half feel sharper and more engaging. The stakes feel higher because Terri is finally allowed to participate. This story gave me some huge Goonies vibes and I was all in for every moment.
• Veral’s protective nature is both endearing and maddening. There is a moment where he tries to solve a problem entirely on his own, clearly believing he is shielding Terri, and it backfires. I found myself sympathizing with him even while wishing he would trust her more.
Limitations
• The slow start is noticeable. The months-long travel sequence is intentionally written to show Terri’s boredom and frustration, but as a listener I felt that drag. I wanted the story to move sooner.
• I wished for more clarity around the external threat. Once the salvage mission becomes dangerous, the tension is great, but I occasionally wanted more detail about the antagonistic forces involved. The danger is real, but sometimes the motivations feel thin.
Narration
Jessica Threet and Christopher Boucher return as dual narrators, and their performances add a lot of texture to the story. Threet captures Terri’s mix of irritation, longing, and determination with a tone that feels grounded and human. She also does an awesome job as Azan, who has a terrific accent and sounds completely different than Terri.
Boucher’s portrayal of Veral is steady and controlled, which fits a character who is half-cyborg and constantly calculating risk. Like Threet, he does the royal pirate captain’s voice with a haughty accent so well and is another narrator that can do many voices and show distinction between characters so well. Several reviewers note that the narration enhances the emotional beats of the story, especially during Terri and Veral’s arguments and reconciliations, and I felt the same. Their voices help distinguish the internal conflicts from the external ones.
Final Opinion
Pirate’s Gold is a character-focused continuation that leans heavily into the challenges of a cross-species relationship. Terri and Veral are compelling because they care deeply about each other but do not always understand one another, and the book lets that friction breathe. The slow beginning tested my patience, but once the salvage mission kicked off, I was fully invested. Terri’s insistence on being treated as a partner rather than a protected possession made me root for her even harder, and Veral’s gradual shift toward trusting her felt earned.
If you enjoy sci-fi romance with protective alien heroes, stubborn human heroines, and a mix of danger and intimacy, this audiobook delivers a satisfying second chapter in Terri and Veral’s journey. It left me eager for the next book and curious about how their dynamic will evolve once they face even bigger challenges ahead.
