When the Weaver Met the Gargoyle: Leafshire Cove Monsters, Book 1 by Lila Appleton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A shire-esque party forces a straight-laced human weaver and a brooding gargoyle guard together in the most delightfully tension-filled ways.
When the Weaver Met the Gargoyle
I have one talent, and it’s not relationships. It’s weaving. But I have one chance to keep my cozy little life in the magical Leafshire Cove, and it’s going to require a partner.
I swore off romance—my last relationship was a humiliating disaster. But to enter the mayor’s tapestry contest and win the contract attached, I need a date, thanks to a ridiculous ancient faerie spell requiring attendants to bring a potential partner.
When my frenemy suggests the new watchtower guard, a growly gargoyle named Romulus who never speaks and hides inside a massive cloak, I think she’s finally lost her mind. But said frenemy refuses to back down, and suddenly, the gargoyle and I are forced into a temporary match.
Romulus is employed by the mayor, so he has no choice but to go. Because of a past issue with his stone magic, he’s dead set on remaining single, so there shouldn’t be a problem.
Until we share the wrong pot of tea…

Main Characters and Plot Overview
Laini has built her life around her craft. As a talented weaver in the cozy village of Leafshire Cove, she pours her heart into creating beautiful tapestries while trying to recover from the fallout of a painful and humiliating past relationship. Romance is the last thing on her mind. Unfortunately, an old faerie tradition tied to the mayor’s tapestry competition requires participants to attend with a potential partner if they hope to compete for the coveted contract.
Enter Romulus, the intimidating gargoyle employed by the mayor as a watchtower guard. Wrapped in heavy cloaks and keeping everyone at a distance, Romulus has his own reasons for avoiding relationships. A past incident involving his stone magic left him convinced that getting close to anyone is dangerous.
When Laini’s persistent frenemy volunteers Romulus as her date, the two are pushed into a temporary arrangement neither of them wants. Their awkward partnership slowly shifts as shared conversations, unexpected kindness, and one very unfortunate tea mix-up force them to confront feelings they never intended to develop.
Highlights and Limitations
One of this audiobook’s biggest strengths is its cozy atmosphere. Leafshire Cove feels lived in and charming, from the fantasy feasts and local traditions to the excitement surrounding the tapestry contest. The weaving competition gives the story direction while also showcasing Laini’s creativity and determination. Her passion for her work makes her easy to root for, especially after learning how badly her previous relationship damaged her confidence.
Romulus was my favorite part of the romance. Beneath his gruff exterior is an incredibly gentle and protective hero who genuinely worries about hurting others because of his magic. The contrast between his fearsome appearance and his tender actions creates some genuinely sweet moments. He falls hard and early and watching him quietly support Laini while trying to deny his own feelings was endearing.
The magical tea incident adds humor and spice to the story without completely overwhelming the emotional connection. The relationship develops quickly, which worked well for the novella length, though readers who prefer a slower burn with extensive character development may find the romance progresses a little too fast. Because the story is short, some secondary characters and elements of the world could have benefited from additional exploration.
Narration
Caitlin Davies does an excellent job capturing Laini’s vulnerability and resilience. She brings warmth to Laini’s internal struggles and conveys both her embarrassment over past mistakes and her excitement when she allows herself to hope again.
Lucas Dixon gives Romulus a wonderfully deep, reserved voice that fits the stoic gargoyle perfectly. His performance highlights Romulus’s protective instincts and quiet longing without making him sound overly brooding. Together, Davies and Dixon create believable chemistry that enhances both the sweeter scenes and the steamier moments. Their dual narration made it easy to connect with each character’s perspective.
Final Thoughts
When the Weaver Met the Gargoyle is a delightful blend of cozy fantasy, monster romance, and small-town charm. I loved the juxtaposition of a talented weaver rebuilding her confidence and a guarded gargoyle convinced he is too dangerous to love. Their relationship is sweet, spicy, and full of heart.
If you enjoy protective monster heroes, low-stakes fantasy settings, forced proximity, and romances that feel like curling up with a warm mug of cider, this audiobook is well worth the listen. It may not satisfy readers looking for an epic fantasy or a lengthy slow burn, but for a comforting escape with lovable characters and plenty of charm, it absolutely delivers.
