Audiobook Review: Djinn and Bare it (Monster Mate Mayhem, #5) by Darci R. Acula. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Djinn and Bare It by Darci R. Acula

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A housewarming gift unleashes a djinn… but I think he’s defective.

To be honest, a big part of why I moved to a remote island was to escape my overbearing mother. She wants me to get married, settle down, and pop out some grand-trophies. I’m not opposed to the idea, but every time I swipe right, I seem to end up dating hot messes or suspiciously perfect guys. No thanks. I want a normal guy who loves to snuggle and binge watch TV until we fall asleep in each other’s arms. A guy who will make me happy. Is that too much to ask?

I hadn’t even finished unpacking before my mom’s housewarming gift was tossed onto my porch—an antique lamp. While checking for damage, I rubbed the lamp, and you’d never guess what came out. Although, the title kind of gives it away, so darn it, you already know what popped out.

It turns out, being shaken around like rice inside a maraca during shipping isn’t great for a djinn’s memory; he is only able to remember bits and pieces of his past. Not to mention that every time he uses magic to help me, I end up with another mess to clean up.

Still, there is no denying I’m attracted to him. I just need to keep my mom from meeting him, so she doesn’t start hearing wedding bells. When someone makes a grab for the lamp and my man, I’m ready to do whatever it takes to save him.

Main Characters and Plot Overview

Genevieve “Genie” has recently moved to a remote monster-friendly island, hoping for a fresh start and some distance from her overbearing mother, whose constant focus on marriage and grandchildren has become exhausting. After a string of disappointing relationships, Genie is afraid of love and is determined to build a life on her own terms. Her plans are disrupted when a housewarming gift arrives from her mother in the form of an antique lamp. When she rubs it, she accidentally releases Roam, a djinn suffering from memory loss after the lamp was damaged during shipping.

Roam is sweet, powerful, and more than a little confused. Large portions of his past are missing, leaving him uncertain about who he was before meeting Genie though he knows that he usually was grumpy at whomever his new owner was and didn’t feel that with Genie. Despite his magical abilities, his attempts to help often create new problems, leading to some of the book’s funniest moments. As the two spend more time together, attraction quickly develops into something deeper. Their growing bond is complicated by Roam’s missing memories, outside threats interested in the lamp, and Genie’s fear of making another mistake in love.

Highlights and Limitations

The strongest aspect of this story is the relationship between Genie and Roam. Rather than focusing on a traditional wish-fulfillment plot, the authors build the romance around mutual respect and genuine affection. One of the sweetest recurring elements is Roam’s confusion over why Genie refuses to use him for wishes. He expects demands and selfishness from humans, but instead finds someone concerned about his happiness and well-being. That dynamic gives the romance an emotional foundation that goes beyond the book’s comedy and spice.

The humor is another major strength. Roam’s magical mishaps and fish-out-of-water reactions create plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The story embraces absurdity without becoming completely ridiculous, and the playful banter keeps the pacing moving quickly. The authors also balance the cozy romance with some surprisingly effective suspense involving attempts to take the lamp and separate Roam from Genie.

One limitation is that the romance develops very quickly. While the instant attraction fits the lighthearted monster-romance tone, readers who prefer slower emotional development may find the relationship progresses too fast. The novella length also means that some of the world-building and backstory receive less attention than they might have in a full-length novel. Roam’s memory-loss storyline is interesting, but there is not enough space to explore every implication in depth.

Narration

Vanessa Moyen and Troy Duran are an excellent pairing for this audiobook. Moyen captures Genie’s frustration, sarcasm, and vulnerability while maintaining the character’s sense of humor. Her performance helps sell both the comedic and emotional scenes, particularly when Genie struggles with trusting her feelings.

Troy Duran shines as Roam. His deep, confident voice fits the powerful djinn perfectly, but he also brings warmth and sincerity to the role. Roam could easily have come across as overly cocky or one-dimensional, yet Duran gives him a charming innocence that makes his devotion believable. His delivery during the flirtatious scenes adds chemistry without overshadowing the character’s sweeter moments. I just wish there were more chapters in Roam’s point of view.

Together, the narrators keep the energy high and make the dialogue sparkle. The dual performance enhances the humor and helps the relationship feel even more engaging.

Final Thoughts

Djinn and Bare It is a fun, fast-paced monster romance that succeeds because of its lovable characters and playful tone. Genie and Roam make an appealing couple, with a relationship built on kindness, trust, and genuine affection rather than magical shortcuts. The combination of humor, romance, memory-loss mystery, and light suspense keeps the story entertaining from beginning to end.

While readers looking for extensive world-building or a slow-burn romance may want more depth, fans of cozy paranormal romance will likely have a great time. The audiobook is elevated by Vanessa Moyen and Troy Duran’s engaging performances, making this an easy recommendation for listeners who enjoy sweet, spicy monster romances with plenty of laughs.
