Audiobook Review: Throne of the Horde King (Horde Kings of Dakkar, #6) by Zoey Draven. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Throne of the Horde King by Zoey Draven

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

High in the icy northlands of Dakkar, I’ve lived a sheltered, predictable, and safe life. My days are spent caring for an ancient temple and staying out of the priestesses’ way. My nights are spent pouring over the great stories of warrior kings and the queens that stole their hearts.

But I have a secret.

I’m a hybrid female. Half-Dakkari, half-human, the first of my kind. The priestesses have risked everything to keep me hidden from the dangerous hordes that roam the wild lands and the greedy king that sits on the throne in Dothik. I am the secret they could never let free.

Then a horde king—with molten eyes and the body of a battle god—shows up at the temple’s gates, demanding entry.

He’s the one I see in my dreams, all ruthless, merciless strength and a tempting smirk to match. Only, he’s not the gentle male I always imagined. He’s cunning, sensual, cruel…and he thinks that everything has a price. Even me.

With a growing danger in the east and a precarious throne in the west, he steals me away from the sacred temple with daring plans all his own.

He thinks I’m a naive temple girl, who will bend easily to his demands. Instead, I fight him at every turn, showing him claws of my own. Instead of fear, lust begins to rise between us—hot, addicting, and forbidden. His teasing touch makes me tremble. His stolen kisses make me weak.

But the horde king of Rath Serok is as mysterious as he is devilish.

And he has his own secret…one that will forever change the future of Dakkar.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Throne of the Horde King brings the Horde Kings of Dakkar series to its conclusion with a story that combines romance, political intrigue, and the resolution of the larger threat facing Dakkar. Kara is a unique heroine, the first known hybrid born from a human and a Dakkari. Hidden away in a remote temple by priestesses for her own protection, she has spent her entire life isolated from the wider world. Her love of books, history, and legends gives her a romantic view of the horde kings, but her sheltered upbringing also leaves her inexperienced when she is finally forced to leave the temple.

Rath Serok, the horde king, enters the story with ambitions far beyond finding a mate. As the illegitimate son of Dothik’s ruler, he has spent years positioning himself to claim the throne and restore order to a fractured world. When he learns that Kara may hold the key to stopping the deadly red fog threatening Dakkar, their paths collide.

The relationship develops during a journey across Dakkar as Kara leaves the only home she has ever known and discovers both the beauty and dangers of the world. Their romance is fueled by constant clashes. Kara refuses to be intimidated by Serok’s authority, while Serok repeatedly underestimates her intelligence and determination. The story gradually shifts from a road trip romance into a high stakes battle for Dakkar’s future, with Kara’s heritage and Serok’s claim to power becoming central to the fate of the planet.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the novels greatest strengths is Kara herself. Although she begins the story sheltered and inexperienced, she is never passive. Her curiosity often creates humorous moments, particularly when she asks blunt questions that leave Serok completely off balance. Rather than becoming a typical innocent heroine, she grows into a confident woman who challenges both Arik and the expectations placed upon her. Her fascination with Dakkari history and her willingness to stand up for herself make her easy to root for.

The worldbuilding is also satisfying because it ties together storylines from earlier books. Long running mysteries surrounding the red fog, Dakkar’s history, and the political future of the kingdom finally receive answers. Readers who have followed the entire series will appreciate how many threads are resolved in this finale.

The biggest limitation is Serok. While his political ambitions and leadership role are interesting, his treatment of Kara can be frustrating at times. Several conflicts between them are driven by his assumptions and stubbornness, which occasionally makes him harder to connect with than previous horde kings. Some readers may also feel that the middle section moves slowly because much of the story focuses on travel, conversations, and historical revelations before the larger conflict reaches its climax.

Narration

Lia Langola and Aaron Shedlock once again deliver a strong performance for the series. Langola captures Kara’s blend of innocence, intelligence, and growing confidence. She makes Kara’s awkward questions and moments of wonder feel natural rather than childish, which is essential for the characters development.

Shedlock brings authority and intensity to Serok. His deep, commanding delivery fits a future king who is accustomed to being obeyed, while still allowing moments of vulnerability to emerge as Arik’s feelings for Kara deepen. Together, the dual narration enhances both the romantic tension and the emotional stakes of the story.

Final Opinion

Throne of the Horde King is a satisfying conclusion to the Horde Kings of Dakkar series. The romance between Kara and Serok is not always smooth, but their relationship feels earned because both characters are forced to confront their flaws and assumptions. Kara stands out as one of the strongest heroines in the series, balancing kindness, intelligence, and resilience without ever losing her unique personality.

While the pacing occasionally slows and Serok may test some listeners’ patience, the audiobook succeeds where it matters most. It delivers emotional payoffs, answers long standing questions, and provides a fitting farewell to the world of Dakkar. Fans of the series will likely find this finale both romantic and rewarding, especially as the fate of the kingdom and the future of its people finally come into focus.
