Defending Morgan by Susan Stoker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Protection leads to passion in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s dangerously hot Mountain Mercenaries adventure.
Defending Morgan
Dispatched to the Dominican Republic to rescue a kidnapped child, former Navy SEAL Archer “Arrow” Kane makes a startling discovery: another hostage—Morgan Byrd, a very beautiful and very well-known missing person who disappeared off the streets of Atlanta a year ago. She’s brave, resilient, and unbroken. All Arrow wants to know is why she ended up in a shack in Santo Domingo. All he feels is the desire to protect.
Morgan is done being the victim and is determined to find out who hates her so much that they want her gone—but not dead. Until then, she has Arrow, an alpha stranger who’s offering a warm and safe place to hide. But as the passion between them flares, so does the fear that whoever took Morgan will do anything to get her back. For Arrow, protecting this woman with a mysterious enemy is the most dangerous mission of his life. And it’s worth every beat of his heart.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary
Morgan Byrd has spent over a year as a missing person after being abducted from Atlanta under mysterious circumstances. When former Marine Archer “Arrow” Kane and his Mountain Mercenaries teammates travel to the Dominican Republic to rescue a kidnapped child, they are stunned to discover Morgan being held captive alongside the little girl. Rather than portraying Morgan as helpless, Susan Stoker makes her remarkably resilient. Even after enduring unimaginable trauma, Morgan’s first instinct is to protect the child in her care and keep fighting for survival.
Arrow is immediately drawn to Morgan’s courage and determination. Once they’re safely back in the United States, he becomes her protector while the team investigates who orchestrated her kidnapping and why she was kept alive for so long. The mystery surrounding Morgan’s abduction drives much of the story. As clues emerge, Morgan realizes the threat may come from someone much closer to home than she ever suspected. The romance develops alongside the investigation, with Arrow providing a safe space for Morgan as she begins the difficult process of rebuilding her life.
Highlights and Limitations
The strongest aspect of this book is Morgan herself. Stoker allows her to be traumatized without making her weak. One particularly memorable element is how fiercely Morgan protects the young girl she was imprisoned with. Even while struggling to survive her own captivity, she refuses to abandon the child. That protective instinct reveals her character long before the romance fully develops.
Arrow is also one of the better heroes in the series. His protectiveness never crosses into controlling behavior. He understands that Morgan needs time to heal and consistently prioritizes her emotional recovery over his own desires. Their relationship feels more patient and supportive than some romantic suspense couples.
The suspense plot kept me engaged because the question was never simply who kidnapped Morgan, but why. The revelation behind her abduction adds several surprising twists that I did not fully anticipate.
My main limitation is that Arrow falls for Morgan very quickly. While the circumstances create an intense bond, the emotional connection sometimes develops faster than felt entirely realistic. In addition, readers who prefer lighter romances should be aware that Morgan’s backstory involves serious trauma and abuse, making this one of the heavier entries in the series.
Narration
Stella Bloom delivers a strong performance that captures both the suspense and emotional weight of the story. Her portrayal of Morgan reflects the character’s vulnerability without diminishing her strength. The fear, confusion, and determination Morgan experiences after her rescue come through clearly in Bloom’s performance.
Bloom also handles Arrow’s steady, protective personality well. Her pacing during the action scenes keeps the tension high, while quieter moments between Morgan and Arrow feel intimate and sincere. Because the story deals with difficult subject matter, the narrator’s ability to convey emotion without becoming overly dramatic was especially important, and she succeeded.
Final Opinion
Defending Morgan is one of the most emotional books in the Mountain Mercenaries series. The combination of a compelling kidnapping mystery, a resilient heroine, and a hero who understands that healing takes time made this audiobook particularly memorable. Morgan’s journey from captive to survivor is the true heart of the story, while Arrow’s unwavering support makes their romance feel earned.
If you enjoy romantic suspense featuring strong survivors, protective military heroes, and a mystery that unfolds gradually, this audiobook is well worth listening to. It tackles difficult themes but balances them with hope, healing, and a satisfying romance.
