Chloe Harris has been trapped in a nightmare ever since her father’s death. Once an independent financial planner with a promising future, she is now under the control of her abusive brother, Leon, who is connected to organized crime and determined to exploit her for access to a substantial inheritance. After a desperate attempt to escape, Chloe crosses paths with Ronan “Ro” Cross, a former SAS soldier and member of the Mountain Mercenaries, a group dedicated to protecting women and children from abuse and trafficking.

Ronan lives a relatively quiet life between missions, restoring engines on his remote Colorado property. When Chloe literally stumbles into his world bruised, frightened, and unwilling to trust anyone, his protective instincts immediately kick in. What follows is a high-stakes romantic suspense story as Ronan and the Mountain Mercenaries work to free Chloe from her brother’s control while uncovering the full extent of the criminal network surrounding her. The danger feels personal because Leon is not just a faceless villain. He is family, which makes Chloe’s situation even more heartbreaking.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the strongest aspects of this book is Chloe’s resilience. Although she has endured emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, she never comes across as weak. She is terrified for good reason, but she continues looking for opportunities to escape and reclaim her life. The scenes where she slowly learns to trust Ronan are particularly satisfying because the author allows that trust to develop naturally rather than having Chloe instantly overcome her trauma.

Ronan is also an appealing hero. He is protective without becoming controlling, and he consistently respects Chloe’s boundaries. In many romance novels, alpha heroes can dominate every interaction, but Ronan’s patience is what makes him stand out. His actions show that he understands Chloe’s need to make her own choices after having her freedom stolen.

The suspense plot is engaging throughout. The combination of organized crime, corruption, and the Mountain Mercenaries’ rescue efforts creates genuine tension. I also appreciated the strong camaraderie among the mercenary team, which adds depth to the story and builds anticipation for future books in the series.

My main limitation is that the romance develops very quickly. While the emotional connection between Ronan and Chloe is believable, the speed of their romantic commitment may feel rushed for some listeners given the severity of Chloe’s trauma. There are also moments where certain aspects of the criminal underworld and mob connections require some suspension of disbelief. These elements did not ruin the story for me, but they occasionally felt a bit convenient.

Narration

Stella Bloom delivers a strong performance that fits the emotional tone of the story. She does an excellent job conveying Chloe’s fear, vulnerability, and gradual recovery. The emotional scenes feel authentic rather than melodramatic, which is especially important given the heavy subject matter.

Bloom also handles the male characters well, giving Ronan a confident and reassuring presence without making him sound overly exaggerated. Her pacing keeps the suspense moving forward, and she effectively differentiates the members of the Mountain Mercenaries so conversations are easy to follow. The narration enhanced both the romance and the suspense elements of the novel.

Final Opinion

Defending Chloe is one of the stronger entries in the Mountain Mercenaries series. The combination of romantic suspense, emotional healing, and action creates an engaging listening experience from start to finish. Chloe’s journey from victim to survivor is compelling, and Ronan’s steady support makes him an easy hero to root for.

Listeners who enjoy protective heroes, rescue-focused romantic suspense, and stories centered on recovery from trauma will likely find a lot to appreciate here. While the romance moves faster than I would have preferred, the emotional core of the story remains strong. Stella Bloom’s narration adds another layer of depth, making this an audiobook that is easy to become invested in and difficult to pause.
