Defending Allye by Susan Stoker
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Love is a life-and-death risk for the Mountain Mercenaries in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s explosive series of alpha heroes, hot action, and hard passion…
Defending Allye
Ever since his rescue op off the Pacific Coast, Mountain Mercenary Gray Rogers hasn’t been able to forget his latest “job” — Allye Martin. Any other woman would have panicked during a rescue, but the wily dancer kept her cool — even after being kidnapped by an elusive human trafficker. And Gray couldn’t be happier when a grateful Allye follows him home to Colorado Springs…
For Allye, finding sanctuary in the arms — and bed — of the former Navy SEAL is only temporary. People are disappearing off the streets of San Francisco, victims of the same underground trade that targeted her, and Allye could be the key to dismantling the entire operation. She’s willing to do anything to bring them down. Gray isn’t — for good reason. But you don’t say no to a tough girl like Allye who refuses to play it safe.
Now Gray is risking more than ever before. The Mountain Mercenaries have his back. But is it enough to keep the woman he loves out of harm’s way?

Main Characters and Plot Overview
Gray Rogers is a former Navy SEAL and a member of the Mountain Mercenaries, a group dedicated to rescuing victims of human trafficking and other dangerous crimes. During a mission off the California coast, Gray helps rescue Allye Martin, a dancer who has been kidnapped by traffickers. What immediately sets Allye apart is her composure. Even after enduring a terrifying ordeal, she remains calm, observant, and determined to survive.
After the rescue, Gray cannot stop thinking about her. Allye also finds herself drawn to the protective but caring mercenary. Their paths cross again when Allye discovers she possesses information that could help expose a trafficking network. As more women begin disappearing, Allye becomes a target once more. Gray and his team work to keep her safe, but Allye refuses to sit on the sidelines while others remain in danger.
The romance develops alongside a suspenseful investigation, with the couple facing both external threats and their growing feelings for each other. The story combines action, danger, and emotional connection from beginning to end.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the book’s greatest strengths is Allye herself. She has endured a difficult childhood, time in foster care, and a traumatic kidnapping, yet she remains compassionate and resilient. Rather than becoming a passive heroine, she actively contributes to the investigation and refuses to let fear control her decisions.
Gray is the classic protective alpha hero, but he also shows a softer side. His concern for Allye feels genuine, especially in quieter moments when he helps her feel safe and valued after everything she has endured. Their relationship develops quickly, but the intensity makes sense given the circumstances surrounding their first meeting.
The suspense elements are particularly effective. The trafficking storyline creates real stakes, and the villain is genuinely disturbing, especially since readers are aware there are actually people like him out in the real world. Several scenes create a strong sense of tension because it never feels certain that everyone will make it through unharmed.
The biggest limitation is that some readers may find Gray overly protective at times. His desire to shield Allye occasionally clashes with her determination to make her own choices. The romance also moves fairly fast, which may not appeal to readers who prefer a slower emotional build.
Narration
Stella Bloom delivers a strong solo performance. She does an excellent job distinguishing between the various characters, especially the members of the Mountain Mercenaries team. Her portrayal of Allye captures both vulnerability and strength, allowing listeners to understand why Gray admires her so much.
Bloom handles the emotional scenes particularly well. The fear, determination, and tenderness all come through clearly in her performance. She also maintains a steady pace during the action sequences, helping the suspense remain engaging throughout the audiobook. Her narration adds depth to both the romance and the thriller aspects of the story.
Final Thoughts
Defending Allye is an exciting start to the Mountain Mercenaries series. Susan Stoker balances romance and suspense effectively while tackling the serious subject of human trafficking. The combination of a capable heroine, a devoted hero, and a high-stakes investigation kept me invested from beginning to end.
While the protective alpha dynamics and fast-moving romance may not work for everyone, I found Gray and Allye easy to root for. Their relationship felt heartfelt, and the suspense provided plenty of momentum. Combined with Stella Bloom’s engaging narration, this audiobook delivers a satisfying blend of danger, romance, and emotional connection. It left me eager to continue the series and learn more about the rest of the Mountain Mercenaries team.
