Sinner’s Secret by K. Loraine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I might be a cowboy, but I’m no gentleman.
Sinner’s Secret
Ten years ago I crossed the line with my younger brother’s best friend. I knew she was in love with me, and I couldn’t resist her. River Adams gave me her innocence on her eighteenth birthday. I broke her in return and made her hate me. I thought walking away from her would be easy, but I never expected to come face to face with everything I gave up.
Thanks to a stipulation in my dad’s will, she’s back and we have to live together.
Me.
Her.
My brother Walker, who has carried a torch for her since they were kids.
And, how could I forget, Bishop? The ranch hand who can’t keep his eyes off her.
The years between us may not matter anymore, but the secrets and lies always will. My family has blood on its hands, no one more so than me. If she finds out the truth about Twisted Cross Ranch she’ll never forgive me.
I was born to be the villain, but when she looks at me, I wish I could be her hero.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary
River Adams returns to Twisted Cross Ranch after ten years away when a clause in the late Daniel Cross Sr.‘s will forces her back into the lives she tried to leave behind. As a teenager, River was deeply in love with Daniel Cross Jr., the older brother of her best friend Walker. On her eighteenth birthday, she gave Daniel her heart and her virginity, only to have him shatter both shortly afterward. Now an accomplished accountant, River is determined to uncover the truth behind her parents’ deaths while navigating the complicated emotions stirred up by her return.
Daniel Cross Jr., known as Cross, is the classic tortured antihero. He carries guilt, anger, and dangerous family secrets that make him push River away even when it is obvious he still wants her. Walker Cross is the opposite in many ways. He has loved River for years and sees her return as a second chance to finally win her heart. Then there is Bishop, a ranch hand and former serviceman struggling with trauma and PTSD. Unlike the brothers, Bishop has no shared history with River, which creates a fresh and surprisingly tender connection.
The story blends cowboy romance with crime and suspense. As River investigates suspicious financial dealings tied to the ranch and learns more about the Cross family’s hidden operations, she finds herself caught between three very different men while a larger mystery unfolds around her. The book ends on a major cliffhanger that leaves several questions unanswered.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the novel’s biggest strengths is the distinct personalities of the three male leads. Cross is gruff, possessive, and emotionally self-destructive. Walker brings warmth, charm, and years of unspoken devotion. Bishop stands out as the most emotionally vulnerable character, particularly in scenes where his struggles with physical touch and trauma are explored. None of the relationships feel interchangeable.
River is also an engaging heroine. She refuses to be intimidated by the Cross brothers and regularly pushes back against Cross’s attempts to control situations. Some of the best moments come from her sharp banter with him, especially when she deliberately calls him “Danny” just to get under his skin.
The mystery surrounding the ranch adds tension beyond the romance. The investigation into the Cross family secrets and the questions surrounding River’s parents give the story momentum even during slower relationship-focused scenes.
The main limitation is that this is clearly the first installment of a larger story. Several major mysteries remain unresolved, and Cross’s behavior can become frustrating because he spends much of the book refusing to communicate. Readers looking for a complete romantic arc may be disappointed by the cliffhanger ending and the number of unanswered questions left for future books.
Narration
The casting for this audiobook is excellent. Stella Hunter delivers a strong performance as River, balancing vulnerability, determination, and sarcasm without ever making the character feel weak. Her emotional scenes, particularly those involving River’s painful memories of Cross, carry genuine weight.
Jason Clarke is perfectly suited to Cross. His deep, commanding voice captures both the characters authority and the emotional turmoil simmering beneath the surface. Aaron Shedlock gives Walker a warmth and sincerity that make his feelings for River believable, helping distinguish him from his more brooding brother.
J.F. Harding may be the standout performer of the group. His portrayal of Bishop captures the character’s quiet intensity and emotional scars beautifully. Harding’s performance makes Bishop’s protective instincts and inner struggles particularly compelling.
The use of multiple narrators enhances the story significantly by allowing each major character to feel distinct and authentic.
Final Opinion
Sinner’s Secret is an addictive start to the Twisted Cross Ranch series. K. Loraine and Meg Anne successfully combine second-chance romance, childhood friendships, family secrets, criminal intrigue, and a compelling why-choose romance into a fast-paced story. The chemistry between River, Cross, Walker, and Bishop is strong, but the emotional tension and mystery elements are what truly drive the book.
While the cliffhanger ending and Cross’s stubbornness may frustrate some listeners, the engaging characters, layered relationships, and excellent narration make this audiobook difficult to stop listening to. Fans of dark cowboy romance, romantic suspense, and emotionally complicated heroes will likely be eager to jump straight into the next installment.
