Step Stalker by Jessa Kane
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
While Navy SEAL Vale Butler is overseas, letters from his stepsister have kept him sane. Now he’s returned home a hero, eager to match a face to the words, never expecting to be attracted to the girl. Ferociously. Urgently. Dangerously. Lula is off-limits, but for the first time in Vale’s life, he is breaking protocol and following the orders of his heart, no matter the consequences.

Main Characters and Premise
Step Stalker follows Lula and Vale, two characters pulled into an intense and obsessive dynamic that leans heavily into taboo territory. Vale is written as deeply possessive, with a fixation on Lula that drives much of the story’s tension. Lula, on the other hand, comes across as more reactive than proactive, often swept up in Vale’s overwhelming presence rather than fully shaping the relationship herself. Their connection is immediate and consuming, but it would have benefited from more time spent exploring who they are beyond their attraction to each other.
Story and Pacing
As a novella, the story moves very quickly. There is little room for gradual development, and that shows in both the plot and the emotional arc. The premise has potential for something darker and more layered, but the pacing prioritizes intensity over depth. Key moments that could have added complexity to Lula and Vale’s relationship are rushed, making their bond feel more situational than fully earned.
Themes and Tone
Jessa Kane leans into her usual themes of obsession and control, and this book is no exception. However, the recurring “Daddy” dynamic that appears in many of her works is present here as well, and it may not appeal to every reader. If that trope is not your preference, it can pull you out of the story rather than deepen the emotional connection. Personally, I get the ick from using the word Daddy in any intimate interaction. If this had been a full book instead of a novella, I probably wouldn’t have read it.
Heat Versus Story
There is a strong emphasis on steamy scenes, which often take precedence over character development and world building. While the chemistry between Lula and Vale is clear, the focus on physical connection comes at the expense of narrative depth. Readers looking for a more balanced blend of plot and romance may find this aspect frustrating.
Overall Impression
Step Stalker delivers exactly what fans of Jessa Kane might expect, a fast, intense, and highly charged romance with a taboo edge. However, the novella length limits its ability to fully develop its characters and setting, and the heavy focus on explicit content overshadows the story itself. With more space to explore Lula and Vale as individuals and to build out the world around them, this could have been a much more compelling read.
