Main Characters and Story Setup

Shared by the Bears, written by Stephanie Brother, leans fully into its fairytale inspiration with a bold, modern twist on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldie is the human heroine who quite literally stumbles into the territory and lives of three very different men who are secretly bear shifters.

Goldie is portrayed as curious, impulsive, and a little reckless, which mirrors the classic Goldilocks energy. She is not just wandering aimlessly though. She is searching for belonging and stability after feeling disconnected from her previous life. That emotional vulnerability is what makes her receptive to the intense bond she forms with the three men.

Hunter, Robert, and Evan each embody a distinct personality that mirrors both archetypal romance roles and the “three bears” dynamic. Hunter is the dominant and protective alpha figure. He is intense, territorial, and immediately suspicious of Goldie’s presence, but his protectiveness quickly shifts into possessive desire. Robert represents the steady, “just right” middle ground. He is calm, rational, and acts as the emotional anchor of the group, often mediating tension between the others. Evan is the more playful and approachable of the three, bringing warmth and humor. His openness makes him the easiest for Goldie to connect with at first.

Their identities as bear shifters are central to the story. The animalistic instincts, especially around claiming a mate and protecting territory, drive much of the plot and relationship dynamics. The retelling aspect is woven through details like Goldie entering their home uninvited and metaphorically testing what each man offers her, emotionally and physically, before realizing she wants all three.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the strongest highlights is how unapologetically the book commits to its premise. It does not try to tone down the reverse harem or the paranormal elements. Instead, it embraces them, giving readers exactly what they expect from a bear shifter romance. The chemistry between Goldie and the three men is immediate and intense, with each relationship offering a different emotional and physical dynamic. For example, Hunter’s scenes lean into dominance and control, while Evan’s interactions are more teasing and affectionate, creating variety in tone.

The fairytale retelling aspect is another standout. The parallels are clear without feeling overly forced. Goldie’s exploration of the bears’ home and her gradual attachment to each man echoes the original story in a way that feels clever rather than gimmicky.

I enjoyed the kink in this one. Goldie is a locksmith who is called to the home of Robert Bjorn, whose house has been broken into and he has a room that also has a broken lock, the room is a “red” room, which calls to all of Goldie’s kinks, especially those of being locked up and under the control of a man. Robert is embarrassed by his room and the fact that Goldie sees his room, which he has locked up since he was never able to find a woman who shared his kinks and with whom he could put the room to use.

However, the book does have limitations. The pacing is very fast, which can make the emotional development feel rushed. Goldie goes from stranger to fully committed partner to three men in a short span of time, and while this is common in the genre, it may feel abrupt for some listeners. The world building around the bear shifter society is also fairly light. There are hints about rules, territory, and hierarchy, but these elements are not deeply explored.

Additionally, because the focus is heavily on romance and physical connection, secondary plot elements and character backstories sometimes take a back seat. Readers looking for a more layered or complex narrative may find it somewhat surface level. I like these two narrators and I am glad there is a male and a female. The audiobook would benefit more from a full cast, duet narration, but as it is, it was very enjoyable.

Narration and Performance

The audiobook is brought to life by Carolyn Eve and Oliver Highpoint, and their performances play a significant role in the overall experience.

Carolyn Eve captures Goldie’s mix of curiosity and vulnerability well. Her tone shifts naturally between uncertainty and growing confidence, which helps ground the character even when the plot moves quickly. She gives Goldie enough personality to feel distinct rather than generic.

Oliver Highpoint voices the male characters with clear differentiation, which is crucial in a reverse harem story. Hunter’s voice carries a deeper, more commanding edge, while Robert sounds calmer and more measured. Evan comes across as lighter and more playful. This distinction helps listeners keep track of who is speaking and reinforces their personality differences.

At times, the intensity of the romantic scenes can feel slightly exaggerated in delivery, but that also aligns with the heightened tone of the story itself. Overall, the narration enhances the experience rather than distracting from it.

Final Thoughts

Shared by the Bears is exactly what it promises to be: a fast paced, steamy paranormal romance with a playful fairytale twist. It does not aim for deep world building or slow burn emotional arcs and expecting that would miss the point. Instead, it delivers a fantasy driven, character focused story where the appeal lies in the chemistry between Goldie and her three very different bear shifters.

The characters are distinct enough to keep the dynamic interesting, and the narration adds another layer of engagement. While the story may feel rushed and somewhat simplistic in places, it succeeds in creating an entertaining and immersive listening experience for fans of reverse harem and shifter romance.

If you enjoy bold premises, strong personality contrasts, and a reimagining of familiar tales with a much more adult edge, this audiobook will likely hit the mark.
