Caught Up by Navessa Allen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I wanted this woman, and I was a man who always got what he wanted.
Nico ‘Junior’ Trocci knows Lauren Marchetti is off limits. She is sweetness and laughter, whereas Junior exists in a world of violence and depravity. Men like him don’t get to have women like her. It’s why he pushed her away back in high school and has kept his distance ever since.
But when Junior looks Lauren up online, he discovers the shy, bookish girl he remembers is gone. In her place is a strikingly beautiful woman whose social media is filled with scantily clad pictures of herself and a connection to a nearby play club. Junior’s innocent curiosity quickly turns into a dark obsession. But watching Lauren from a distance isn’t enough; he needs to make her his.
He’s ruthless; a walking red flag. Good thing red is my favorite color.
Lauren is intrigued by the mystery man who keeps showing up at her club, who tempts her white-hot desires. But as their flirty online messages stir up a deeper form of connection, Lauren worries she’s developing real feelings for this brooding stranger. As their combined desire ratchets up to a breaking point, who will seduce who? And will they survive the fall?
* The sizzling new novel in the INTO DARKNESS trilogy now! *
Caught Up is a fast-paced dark romance with a morally grey male lead. Some themes and scenes may be disturbing to listeners. Please check the content warning at the beginning of the book.
I wasn’t a big fan of these main characters.

Caught Up is a dark romance, that opens with a full slate of trigger warnings, and it earns every one of them. The story begins with the hero, Nico Trocci, explaining why he wears black on nights like this. Black hides blood. It is a stark introduction to the world he lives in and the work he and his brothers do for their father. They have just finished handling a local problem named Tommy Marchetti, a job Nico considers a birthday gift. Tommy’s daughter Lauren has always interested him, and with her father gone, Nico sees nothing standing in his way anymore.
Characters and Plot
Nico, also known as Junior, is the oldest of the Trocci brothers and the natural leader among them. Their father works for the mob, and the brothers are the ones who take care of the dirtiest jobs. Nico has his own apartment, but he and his brothers often stay at their father’s house, especially after spending the last month covering up the death of a billionaire serial killer. Their cousin killed the man, and the Trocci brothers were tasked with making it look like he was still alive.
Years earlier, when Nico was eighteen, he was caught with Lauren Marchetti. Her father beat him and threatened to kill him if he ever went near her again. Lauren was a quiet, shy girl back then, but she has since grown into a confident woman who lives life on her own terms. She now works as a cam girl, creating provocative content with her roommates in their three-story brownstone. Lauren sees her work as empowering and fights for the rights of sex workers. She has a favorite subscriber, NT95, who pays for extra content and private interactions.
Nico has reached a breaking point with his father. He no longer wants to live the life he was born into, and a confrontation between them is inevitable. His father still agrees with Tommy Marchetti’s old warning and is the last obstacle between Nico and Lauren. Nico knows he needs to break free from his father’s control, and he needs to do it soon.
Highlights and Limitations
Highlights
• The dynamic between Nico and his brothers is compelling. Their loyalty to one another is absolute, even when the work they do is morally questionable.
• Lauren’s confidence in her body and her career adds a layer of complexity to her character. She is not ashamed of her choices and refuses to let anyone define her worth.
• The tension between Nico’s violent world and Lauren’s unapologetic independence creates a strong push and pull that drives the story forward.
• The subplot involving the billionaire serial killer cover-up adds a gritty, suspenseful edge that keeps the stakes high.
• The book explores themes of agency, identity, and the cost of loyalty in a way that feels intentional and layered.
Limitations
• Readers who struggle to connect with heroines who work in the sex industry may find Lauren difficult to relate to. Her passion for her job and her comfort with explicit content can create emotional distance for some.
• Nico’s possessiveness and the morally dark nature of his world may feel overwhelming, especially for readers who prefer lighter or more traditionally romantic heroes.
• The story leans heavily into its darker elements, which can overshadow the emotional development between the characters at times.
• The sex club scene may be a turning point that some readers find uncomfortable or difficult to reconcile with the romance.
Narration
The audiobook is performed in duet narration by Teddy Hamilton and Kasi Hollowell, and the pairing works extremely well for this story. Teddy Hamilton remains one of the strongest male narrators in romance. His voice is rich, controlled, and expressive, and he brings Nico’s intensity to life without ever tipping into caricature. He handles the darker emotional beats with precision and gives Nico a presence that feels both dangerous and magnetic.
Kasi Hollowell’s youthful, sultry tone is a perfect match for Lauren. She captures Lauren’s confidence, vulnerability, and playful energy with ease. Her performance adds depth to Lauren’s character, especially in scenes where Lauren is navigating the blurred lines between her online persona and her real emotions. Together, the narrators create a listening experience that feels immersive and emotionally charged.
Final Opinion
Caught Up is a bold, gritty, and unapologetically dark romance that leans fully into its themes of obsession, agency, and family loyalty. Nico and Lauren’s story is intense, messy, and morally complex, and it will appeal to readers who enjoy romances that push boundaries and explore the darker corners of desire and identity. While Lauren’s profession and Nico’s violent world may not resonate with every reader, the story delivers strong character dynamics, high stakes, and a compelling emotional undercurrent. The audiobook narration elevates the material even further, making this a gripping listen for fans of dark romance who appreciate powerful performances.
