Does It Hurt? by H.D. Carlton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Who am I?
I’ve forgotten the answer to that question long ago. Ever since I ran from that house, so desperate to escape, I left with only the clothes on my back and socks on my feet. After that day, I’ve only ever walked in stolen shoes.
Could I be a girl who is searching for the meaning of life in faceless men? They were all so forgettable. Until he came along. He took me under a waterfall and made me forget my name, and in return, I took his instead.
Enzo Vitale.
An enigmatic man that will only ever love the deep sea. Or rather the predators that inhabit it. Turns out, he’s not so different than the monsters he feeds. He lured me onto his boat like a fish in the ocean, seeking vengeance for my crime. Had I realized his intentions and that a massive storm would leave us shipwrecked, I would’ve run.
Now, I’m a girl who’s seeking refuge in a decrepit lighthouse with a man who loathes me almost as much as he craves me. He wants to hurt me, but the old caretaker of the abandoned island may have intentions far more sinister.
It’s no longer a question of who I am, but rather, will I survive?

Characters and Plot Dynamics
H. D. Carlton delivers a dark and emotionally charged romance with Does It Hurt?, a story that thrives on tension, trauma, and a brand of chemistry that feels both dangerous and addictive. At the center of it all are Enzo Vitale and Sawyer Bennett, two characters who are as fractured as they are compelling.
Sawyer is a drifter by necessity, someone who has survived through instinct and grit rather than stability or trust. She is guarded, resourceful, and shaped by a past that has taught her to rely on no one. Enzo, in contrast, is intense and brooding, a presence that feels immediately unsettling in a way that is threatening and magnetic at the same time. Their first encounter is far from conventional, and from the beginning their dynamic is built on suspicion, attraction, and a constant struggle for control.
The plot traps them together in a setting that amplifies every emotional fault line. The isolation creates an atmosphere that feels heavy and almost claustrophobic, turning even the smallest interactions into moments charged with meaning. As the story unfolds, both characters are forced to confront not only each other but also the parts of themselves they have spent years avoiding.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the strongest elements of this audiobook is its emotional intensity. Carlton does not shy away from darkness, whether psychological, emotional, or physical. The relationship between Enzo and Sawyer is messy and often uncomfortable yet undeniably engaging. Their connection is not built on softness or easy trust. It grows from raw honesty, shared pain, and the slow erosion of the walls they have built around themselves. Those cracks are where the story finds its most powerful moments.
That said, this book will not suit every listener. The themes are heavy, and several scenes are difficult to sit with. The characters make choices that may frustrate or unsettle some readers, and the romance leans fully into morally gray territory. The kinks explored in the story are extremely unconventional and far too intense for my personal taste. I suspect many listeners will struggle with them as well, especially if they prefer romance that stays closer to emotional intimacy rather than extreme physical dynamics.
Narration
The narration by Troy Duran and Michelle Sparks adds a strong layer to the experience. Troy Duran’s deep, commanding voice fits Enzo perfectly, capturing his volatility and the simmering danger beneath his calm exterior. He elevates every scene he touches. Michelle Sparks brings Sawyer’s resilience and vulnerability to life, though her delivery occasionally feels less dynamic beside Duran’s intensity. Together, they create a believable dual perspective that anchors the emotional weight of the story.
Final Opinion
Overall, Does It Hurt? is a gripping and deeply atmospheric dark romance that thrives on tension, flawed characters, and emotional depth. It pulls you in and refuses to let go, even when the subject matter becomes uncomfortable or unsettling. The story is bold in its willingness to explore the darker corners of desire and survival, and it never pretends to be anything other than what it is.
For listeners who enjoy morally complex characters, high emotional stakes, and romance that pushes far beyond traditional boundaries, this audiobook delivers a memorable and intense experience. For those who prefer gentler love stories or more conventional kink dynamics, this one may feel overwhelming. Personally, I found the psychological tension and character work compelling, even when the extremes of the romance were not to my taste.
In the end, this is a story that lingers. It leaves you thinking about the ways people use pain to protect themselves, the ways trust can form in the most volatile circumstances, and the ways love can emerge from places that feel impossible. If you are drawn to dark romance that tests emotional limits and explores the messy intersection of fear, desire, and survival, this audiobook offers a journey that is unsettling, intense, and strangely unforgettable.
