Audiobook Review: Deadly Obsession (The Obsession Duet, #2) by J.L. Beck & C. Hallman. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We were only kids when I met him. My stalker, savior, the man who protected me from all the evil in the world.

I should’ve trusted him, believed him when he told me he was only trying to keep my safe. I thought the worst was behind me. Little did I know the worst was yet to come. Kidnapped by a man capable of the worst kind of evil, I am thrust into a dark and dangerous world where blood and wealth are the only things that matter.

I’m a pawn in the war for power. The man I was desperate to escape from is now the only one that can save me. I’ll do anything to be back in his arms. He saved me once; he’ll do it again. The only thing is that, when the dust settles and all the truths are revealed, will we be standing side by side? And what happens when I find I wasn’t just meant to be in this world?

I was meant to run it.

Characters and Plot Dynamics

Deadly Obsession by J.L. Beck and C. Hallman picks up where the first book leaves off and drives the story into even darker, more emotionally charged territory. As the conclusion to this duet, it leans fully into the dangerous connection between Dove Miller and Zane Brennan, refusing to soften the edges of their relationship.

Dove continues to grow in this installment. While she still carries the weight of everything she has endured, there is a stronger sense of agency here. She is no longer just reacting to the chaos around her. Instead, she begins to make choices that shape her own path, even when those choices are risky or complicated. Her emotional journey feels more layered, especially as she grapples with her feelings toward someone who was once purely a threat.

Zane remains as compelling and unsettling as ever. A hitman who was originally tasked with killing Dove, his obsession with her has long blurred the line between duty and desire. In this book, that tension reaches its peak. His internal conflict adds depth to his character, showing flashes of something almost human beneath his cold, controlled exterior. At the same time, the story does not try to redeem him, which keeps the tone consistent with the dark romance genre.

The plot is driven by high stakes and emotional intensity. The danger surrounding Dove is no longer distant or abstract. It is immediate and unavoidable, forcing both characters into situations that test their limits. The pacing feels more urgent than in the first book, with a stronger focus on payoff and resolution. As secrets come to light and loyalties are tested, the story builds toward a conclusion that feels fitting for the world these characters inhabit.

Highlights & Limitations

One of the biggest strengths of Deadly Obsession is how it commits to its tone. This is unapologetically dark, and the authors do not try to make the relationship more palatable than it is. For fans of the genre, that honesty is a major plus. The chemistry between Dove and Zane is intense and often uncomfortable, but it is also what makes their dynamic so compelling.

Character development is another highlight, particularly for Dove. Watching her step into her own power adds a satisfying layer to the story. Zane’s perspective also continues to be a strong point, offering insight into a mind that operates very differently from most romantic leads. Just when you think everything will be all right for the two main characters, it explodes into an even more dire situation.

On the downside, some elements may still feel extreme for certain listeners. The moral ambiguity, power imbalance, and violent undertones are not softened, which may limit the book’s appeal. Additionally, while the ending provides resolution, it may feel a bit rushed compared to the slower buildup of the duet as a whole.

The villian in this book turns out to be someone I had hoped would be a hero. That upped the stakes in this book and makes it that much more important for Karma to win in the end. Though I liked the fact that Zane and Dove loved each other and were working for the same end goal, I knew early on what I wanted to happen and given the length of the book, I knew I would have to wait through some disappointments along the way.

Narration

Marcio Catalano and Shiloh James deliver a strong dual narration performance that suits the tone of the story. Marcio Catalano’s voice works particularly well for Zane, capturing both his controlled demeanor and the darker edge of his obsession. There is a steadiness to his delivery that enhances Zane’s calculated nature.

Shiloh James brings emotional depth to Dove, especially in the more vulnerable and conflicted moments. Her performance helps highlight Dove’s growth over the course of the duet. The dual narration format once again works well, giving each character a distinct voice and making the emotional shifts feel more immediate.

Final Opinion

Deadly Obsession is a fitting and intense conclusion to a duet that fully embraces the darker side of romance. It delivers on the tension and complexity established in the first book while pushing both characters to their limits. Dove and Zane remain fascinating in all the best and worst ways, and their story is not easily forgotten.

If you enjoy dark romance that explores obsession without pulling its punches, this audiobook is likely to leave a strong impression. It is not a comfortable listen, but for fans of the genre, it is a satisfying and memorable finale.
