Fear The Reapers by Jessa Halliwell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I’ve trained myself to be numb.
To protect myself by keeping all of my volatile emotions carefully in check.
But when my drug-addicted stepdad offered my younger sister to the Ruthless Mafia Men that run our city…
I had no choice but to react.
Keeping her safe was the only thing I ever cared about
And unlike her, I was already damaged beyond repair
So I did something really stupid,
And offered myself up to them instead.
I expected The Reapers to be cruel,
to push me beyond my limits, and test me at every turn.
but what I didn’t expect…
was to LIKE it.

Characters and Plot
Stevie adored her father and cherished every moment when he came home from work, especially because she knew her mother despised her. By the age of four, years of abuse and neglect had pushed Stevie to shut down her emotions completely. Her father never realized the extent of the harm her mother inflicted, although he knew there was deep hostility between them and often argued with Carla about it. Everything finally exploded one night, and he left when Stevie was five. He died of cancer three years later, leaving Stevie once again in Carla’s care.
During those years, Carla had remarried and had another daughter. Stevie hoped her mother had changed, but instead Carla had become even more cruel. Her bitterness extended to Stevie’s younger sister Alex, and Stevie often stepped in to take punishments meant for her. Their stepfather Malcom spiraled into addiction, the same addiction that had killed Carla, and Stevie did whatever she had to in order to survive. She stayed in the house only long enough to ensure Alex reached her eighteenth birthday so they could leave together.
Meanwhile, Tristan and his three closest friends were running their upscale nightclub, Hells Tavern, when a desperate addict named Malcom arrived. He owed their organization a significant debt and had been sent by one of their dealers, Johnny, who was already in trouble for involving them directly. The Reapers usually kept their distance from street level dealings, but they needed to know what Malcom was offering.
To their disgust, Malcom offered his nearly eighteen-year-old daughter as payment. The Reapers did not traffic women and had no interest in owning anyone, especially when they already had more than enough attention from willing admirers. However, once they learned that Malcom had already told Johnny about the offer, they realized that refusing could make them appear weak to their rivals. Reluctantly, they accepted the deal to maintain their reputation for collecting every debt.
When Malcom returned home, he told the girls that Alex would be going to live with some men as payment. Stevie pretended to help Alex pack but attempted to escape with her through the window. Stevie knew exactly who the Reapers were and understood that they would kill all of them if she did not intervene. To protect her sister, she offered herself instead.
The story then shifts into Stevie’s complex and dangerous new reality with the four men who never expected to have her in their lives:
“Atlas, their powerful leader, knows I don’t belong in their world, but he’s too caught up in protecting his own secrets to save me. I can see the regret in his eyes every time he looks at me.
Ezra, the overly affectionate psycho, looks at me like he wants to eat me—or kill me. Honestly, it’s probably a mix of both. And the scariest thing about him is that he doesn’t really scare me at all.
Cyrus, the Ducati-riding bad boy, is tempting as hell, and he knows it. I refuse to give into his charm, even if he has treated me better than anyone ever has before.
Tristan, the grumpy and silent one, might actually hate me. But I don’t blame him. Out of everyone, he’s the only one who can see how messed up I really am at my core.
The men who accepted me as payment for a debt are toying with my head and my heart, but no matter what happens next, there’s no turning back.
I dug my grave with the Reapers of Caspian Hills, and now it’s time to lie in it.”
Highlights
• I was genuinely surprised to learn that Atlas was engaged at the beginning of the story. Even though it was a marriage of convenience meant to secure a truce between the Diaz Cartel and the Reapers, it added an unexpected layer of tension and political maneuvering.
• The balance between plot and spice worked well. Many why choose romances lean too heavily into smut, but this one offered a satisfying mix of camaraderie, found family, and emotional connection.
• The payback scenes were incredibly satisfying, and the final stretch of the book delivered a strong surge of action and intensity. I am absolutely continuing the series right away.
Limitations
• The story felt a bit too reminiscent of Den of Vipers by K. A. Knight. While the structure of this series is different, the character parallels were hard to ignore. Ezra in particular felt very similar to Diesel, and several other character dynamics echoed that book as well.
Narration
The audiobook is told through multiple points of view and features dual narration by Nikki Monroe and Corvin King. Corvin King remains one of my favorites with his deep, raspy voice that fits dark romance perfectly. Nikki Monroe brings a youthful, emotive quality that suits Stevie’s character and inner turmoil. Together, they create a compelling listening experience that enhances the emotional weight of the story.
Final Opinion
This book delivers a gripping blend of trauma, loyalty, danger, and slow burning attachment. While some elements feel familiar within the genre, the emotional core of Stevie’s journey and the dynamic between the Reapers kept me fully invested. The narration elevates the experience even further. I am eager to see where the series goes next.
