“When your whole world is shaken from all the risks we have taken, dance with me. Dance with me into the colors of dusk.” ~ Ben Harper
I’ve served my country, a man, and a cause. I’ve given my whole being while at the same time finding its true meaning. There was no way for me to know that the day I met the men who were to become my best friends they would introduce me to the love of my life.
Fiery, red hair and hypnotizing, emerald eyes caught my attention.
Creamy soft skin, a stark contrast to mine, seduced my body.
Strength, devotion, and determination stole my heart.
I am Reid Murray and I’ll kill without regret to once again dance in the dusk with my wife.
This war has only begun. I won’t rest until it’s done.

The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💋💋💋 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 👏👏👏👏👏 World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏 Character development: 🤓🥸😎😤😳
The setting: Chicago
The Hero: Reid Murray – Works for Sparrow. Sterling Sparrow is the kingpin of the Chicago underground as well as the head of Sparrow Enterprises. Reid is the Technology specialist of the group, he is quiet and knows everything there is to know about computers.
The heroine: Lorna Murray (previously Pierce) – grew up poor, from the wrong side of the tracks. Her brother Mason did his time in the armed forces in the middle east before he began working with Sterling, Reid and another guy Patrick. Mason brought Lorna to live with them for her own safety.
The Love Story: Reid and Lorna fell in love despite initially hiding their relationship from Mason. They lived in the Tower, a luxury building in Chicago owned by Sparrow.
I hadn’t read any of the other Sparrow Webs books prior to this one except the 80 page prequel called Dangers First Kiss that read like a Cinderella retelling. That one was basically the meet-cute between Reid and Lorna. This book, though is full of intrigue. It begins with Lorna and Sterling Sparrow’s pregnant wife Araneae are both kidnapped and thrown in a dirty cell somewhere by thugs.
The story was good, it was interesting and suspenseful. I said this in another review a few days back, but I am sick lately of books that keep moving from then till now and back (flashbacks). I know they are a valid plot device and create mystery and suspense while furthering the story, but also they are like little cliffhangers when the story is just getting good it will switch from the present to the past or vice versa.
In this one it was the love story between Reid and Lorna in the past and the Kidnapping in the present. I guess I just like to have things in their proper order, but hey that could be due to reading too many books with flashbacks lately.
Like I said the story was great. The romance between Reid and Lorna was minimal and told in flashbacks, but you could tell that they really had a connection and love each other. There was one steamy bedroom scene and it seemed almost obligatory. I almost wouldn’t count this as a romance, more of a thriller. There were some big surprises near the end and I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong. I like it when a book can surprise me like that!
I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
