HARD INSTINCTS (HARD series, #1). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hard Instincts by Chloe Fischer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars.

Special Ops military guy with extrasensory powers – can you get any hotter than that?

Drake had always tried his best to live his life without attracting attention to himself or his four boys, knowing that if anyone found out about their special powers, his kids would be the target of every military group in the world…

But eventually, Drake grew too secure, breaching the very rules meant to keep his family safe.

In an event which nearly cost him his life, Drake makes a devastating decision and loses his boys, possibly forever.

Twenty-eight years later, when all hope of ever locating the whereabouts of his full-grown, powerful sons is disappearing, Drake hears a rumor… there’s a man in the military that has become a very successful operative – but strange things seem to happen around him…

Could this man be one of Drake’s long lost sons?

Ryder has lived life plagued by a sense that he didn’t fit in with the family who raised him, and when strange and violent things start happening around him, Ryder escapes into military life – and with his special skills, he excels.

But when things go awry during a mission, he ends up in the hands of a beautiful but traumatized doctor who inexplicably captures his soul. But Paige has a violent secret too. When she finds out what he can do, will Paige turn against him – or toward him?

Hard Instincts

Good start to the series, but questions remain.

Drake Conway works for the Government and somehow has special powers and an evil group called Oculus wants to take his four sons in order to do research on them to see if the powers have been passed on genetically. Since Drake works for the Government he is protected from Oculus, and his wife and kids are in hiding. However, he was missing them and took off one day to have dinner with them. It turned out to be a grave mistake because Oculus followed him and broke in, killing his wife, shooting him multiple times before his young sons were able to kill the intruders with their powers.

After that, Drake had his second in command move his sons to other families and not tell him where they went. He told the second in command that once Oculus was taken care of, he would ask for their addresses. However, before that happened, Oculus killed the one man that knew where he children were. Drake has spent the next 25 years searching for his boys in order to find them before Oculus does.

This is the story of Ryder who joined the army at age 18 and kept moving up until he was in a position in international intelligence. His specific abilities make him perfect for working alone and he is very good at what he does. However people are starting to notice that he has special skills. A contact of Drakes has called and said he thinks he knows where one of his sons is. Also Ryder feels someone is watching him. I won’t give away any more spoilers, but a love interest is pulled into the mix, and they hit it off very quickly.

I am liking this story and can’t wait to here about the rest of the brothers. It looks like there is also a “Harder” series of 4 books, so I wonder if those are the children of these brothers or new people altogether.
