Audiobook Review: The Gate of the Feral Gods (Dungeon Crawler Carl, #4) by Matt Dinniman. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

New Achievement! Total, Utter Failure.

You failed a quest less than five minutes after you received it. Now that’s talent.

A floating fortress occupied by warrior gnomes. A castle made of sand. A derelict submarine guarded by malfunctioning machines. A haunted crypt surrounded by lethal traps.

It was supposed to be easy. One bubble. Four castles. Fifteen days. Capture each one, and the stairwell is unlocked.

Here’s the thing. It’s never easy. Carl and his team can’t go it alone. Not this time. They must rely on the help of the low-level, I-can’t-believe-these-idiots-are-still-alive crawlers trapped in the bubble with them. But can they be trusted?

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the fifth floor of the dungeon.

Characters and Background Information

At the center of the story is Carl, an increasingly hardened and resourceful crawler who continues to balance survival with a stubborn sense of morality. He is strategic, sarcastic, and constantly adapting to a dungeon that seems designed to break people mentally as much as physically.

Princess Donut, his companion, remains one of the most unique characters in the series. She is a pampered show cat turned lethal dungeon competitor, blending vanity, sharp intelligence, and unexpected bravery. Her dynamic with Carl continues to provide both humor and emotional grounding.

The supporting cast expands in this installment, with other crawlers becoming more prominent as alliances and rivalries shift. There is a growing sense that everyone is being pushed toward larger, more dangerous roles within the dungeon’s twisted entertainment system.

Plot and the Rules of Floor 5

Floor 5 introduces one of the most inventive and chaotic settings in the series. The level is divided into multiple “bubbles,” each representing a different environment such as deserts, oceans, crypts, and floating fortresses. Each bubble operates almost like its own mini dungeon with unique enemies, hazards, and objectives.

The central mechanic revolves around the Gate of the Feral Gods, a powerful and unpredictable artifact. When activated, it can summon incredibly dangerous entities known as feral gods. These beings are not controlled by the user and will attack anything nearby, making the gate as much a liability as a weapon.

Key rules and features of Floor 5 include:
• Crawlers must navigate between bubbles, each with distinct environmental challenges
• Castles within the bubbles serve as major objectives and strongholds
• Control and use of the Gate can drastically alter the balance of power
• The floor encourages large scale conflict between crawlers rather than simple survival
• Environmental hazards and mechanics are just as deadly as monsters

The result is a floor that feels less like a traditional dungeon and more like a chaotic battlefield with shifting rules and constant escalation.

Highlights

The world building on Floor 5 is another major highlight. The bubble system keeps the setting fresh and unpredictable, allowing for a wide variety of encounters and tones. One moment feels like a war story, another like survival horror, and another like dark comedy.

The humor remains sharp and often outrageous, but it is balanced with real stakes. The story continues to explore the psychological toll of the dungeon, showing how the crawlers are changing under constant pressure.

Action sequences are more complex and large scale in this installment. Battles involve strategy, alliances, and environmental manipulation rather than simple fights, which makes them more engaging and memorable.

Limitations

The complexity of Floor 5 can occasionally be overwhelming. With multiple bubbles, factions, and shifting objectives, it can be difficult to keep track of everything, especially in audio format where flipping back is not an option.

Some side characters, while interesting, do not receive enough development due to the sheer scope of the story. This can make certain conflicts feel less impactful than they might otherwise be.

The pacing can feel uneven at times. There are stretches where the story slows down to explain mechanics or set up the next phase, followed by bursts of intense action. While this is partly intentional, it may not work for every listener.

Finally, the chaotic nature of the Gate itself can sometimes feel almost too unpredictable, making outcomes seem less tied to strategy and more to chance.

Narration

One of the biggest strengths of this audiobook is the narration by Jeff Hays. His performance is exceptional, bringing distinct voices, personalities, and emotional weight to a very large cast of characters. His ability to switch between humor, tension, and outright absurdity enhances every scene. Princess Donut in particular is a standout, with a voice that perfectly captures her dramatic flair and attitude. I love that there are sound effects and between them and Jeff Hays, this is every bit as good as a full cast Graphic Audio drama.

Final Opinion

Gate of the Feral Gods is one of the most ambitious entries in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series so far. It expands the scale of the story while maintaining the humor, creativity, and emotional core that make the series stand out.

The audiobook format elevates the experience significantly thanks to Jeff Hays’ performance, which adds personality and clarity to an otherwise complex narrative.

While the structure of Floor 5 can be dense and occasionally hard to follow, the creativity and energy of the story more than make up for it. For fans of the series, this installment delivers bigger stakes, stranger challenges, and some of the most memorable moments yet.
