Trusting Cassidy by Susan Stoker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In this final installment of New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s Silverstone series, a battle-scarred assassin must rescue an old flame from ruthless drug lords.
What was supposed to be a short trip to Jamaica becomes a years-long nightmare as Cassidy Hewitt and her son fall into the grip of an infamous drug kingpin. Desperate for rescue, Cassidy risks everything to send secret letters to the FBI, hoping someone, anyone, will answer her call.
When secret operative Leo “Gramps” Zanardi sees Cassidy’s letters, he knows this isn’t just another covert mission. The two had electric chemistry back in high school, and Leo finds himself eager for a reunion—even if the circumstances aren’t exactly ideal.
After arriving back in Indiana, Leo and Cassidy think they’re free to start a new life together. But the kingpin’s goons won’t let go of Cassidy so easily: they follow her from Jamaica, leaving carnage in their wake. Before the pair can fully embrace the love they’ve been missing all these years, they’ll need the entire Silverstone team’s help to be victorious in the showdown of their lives.

👫🏻 Character Background and Plot Dynamics
Leo “Gramps” Zanardi has traded his Delta Force past for a quieter life as co owner of Silverstone Towing, a successful Indiana business that secretly serves as a front for covert missions carried out for FBI Intelligence. The work keeps him sharp and gives him the sense of purpose he once found in the military, even though every assignment comes with the same unspoken rule: if the team is compromised, no one is coming to save them. Leo thrives on the danger and the brotherhood, and he has long accepted that this is the life he was built for.
His next mission shakes that certainty. The target is a woman trapped inside the Jamaican compound of one of the most powerful drug kingpins in the world. The shock comes when Leo learns the woman is Cassidy Hewitt, a friend from high school who once wrote him letters during his Army years. Cassidy had taken a job in Jamaica without realizing who she was working for. Once she discovered the truth, she and her young son Mario became prisoners. She cannot leave the compound without an escort, she cannot take her son outside the grounds, and she knows far too much to be allowed to walk away alive. Her only hope is the desperate letter she managed to send to the FBI.
Cassidy had already escaped one nightmare when she left her verbally abusive ex husband. She never imagined she would end up in a far worse situation. Mario is suffering from nightmares, and the kingpin’s men have begun using him to move drugs. They threaten to hurt Cassidy if he is caught. One of the lieutenants, Lloyd, has made it clear he wants Cassidy for himself, and she lives in constant fear of what he might do.
When Cassidy is summoned one evening to entertain the kingpin’s guests, she is stunned to find Leo among them. The reunion is a lifeline she never expected, and for Leo it is a mission that instantly becomes personal.
🌟 Strengths
• The long-standing connection between Leo and Cassidy adds emotional weight to the story. Their shared history, the letters she sent him during his Army years, and the quiet affection they both carried create a believable foundation for their relationship. Cassidy married someone else because she never believed Leo would notice her, while Leo always felt drawn to her but respected the life she chose. Their reunion feels earned and heartfelt.
• Mario is a refreshing and thoughtful character. He loves dance and gymnastics and does not fit the stereotypical mold often imposed on young boys in romance novels. Cassidy and Leo choose to let him explore what he loves without forcing labels or expectations on him. This approach gives the story a warm and modern touch.
💔 Limitations
• Leo’s nickname works fine in action scenes, but it becomes distracting during intimate moments. Hearing Cassidy call him Gramps during romantic scenes pulls the listener out of the emotional tone.
• Cassidy makes a remarkably poor decision once Lloyd discovers her situation. It is the kind of impulsive, reckless move that can frustrate readers who prefer heroines with stronger survival instincts. The moment feels out of character and unnecessarily contrived.
🎙 Narration
Lucy Rivers narrates the story with a pleasant voice and clear character differentiation. Her male voices are handled well, which is often a challenge for single narrator romances. The performance leans toward straightforward reading rather than immersive acting. Listeners who enjoy emotional shading or dual narration may find the delivery a bit restrained, although it pairs well with reading and never becomes distracting.
💭 Final Assessment
This installment delivers a mix of high stakes action, emotional reconnection, and a strong sense of found family. The reunion between Leo and Cassidy is compelling, and Mario adds heart to the story. Some character choices, particularly Cassidy’s moment of poor judgment, may test a listener’s patience, and the nickname issue can interrupt the romantic tone. Even so, the blend of danger, loyalty, and second chance romance creates an engaging experience. The audiobook is a solid pick for listeners who enjoy romantic suspense with a protective hero, a resilient heroine, and a plot that moves quickly from tension to tenderness.
