Plot and Character Impressions
Blake Anderson is part owner of Ace Security; the company he and his brothers created after their father was killed by their mother. Their mission is rooted in that trauma. They want the people of Castle Rock to know they can come to Ace Security for help without fear or judgment. Blake, a former military man, first met Alexis while working on the case involving his now sister-in-law Grace, whose wealthy parents had been blackmailing half the town.
When Grace’s parents tried to pull Alexis’s family into their schemes, Alexis stepped in to help Ace Security using her hacking skills and the training she received while studying to become a private investigator. She has now been with the company for more than six months, long after Grace’s parents were sent to prison. Alexis has been quietly nursing a crush on Blake, but she believes he sees her as a temporary fixture. Her history of short-term jobs and her general studies degree do not help her confidence. She is convinced she cannot stay at Ace Security and watch Blake fall in love with someone else. Her plan is simple. Finish the current investigation into the Inca Boyz gang, then disappear and start over somewhere new.
Blake admits he had reservations about Alexis when she first joined the team. Her wealthy background led him to make unfair assumptions about her work ethic. Over time, he has been surprised by how seamlessly she fits in and how valuable she is on cases. Her ability to connect with clients impresses him, and he finds himself drawn to her in ways he did not expect.
What Makes This Story Shine
• Alexis has endured far more than her privileged upbringing suggests. She was beaten in high school by a former friend who resented her wealth and convinced a group of boys to attack her. That same friend now has ties to the Inca Boyz, and Alexis plans to use that connection to help the investigation. It is a risky move that could easily backfire.
• As with many of Susan Stoker’s military romances, the story blends suspense and romance in a way that keeps the tension high. This book leans more heavily into intimate scenes than many of her others, which may appeal to readers who enjoy a stronger romantic focus.
• The undercover operation within the gang adds danger, urgency, and emotional stakes. It also becomes a turning point for Alexis, who grows from someone unsure of her abilities into a capable and confident woman who can hold her own in threatening situations.
Minor Drawbacks
• While the undercover plot is exciting, the reasoning behind sending Alexis into a violent gang to gather evidence for a police task force stretches believability. She may work for a security company, but she is still a civilian and placing her in that level of danger feels unrealistic. The decision to have her wear a wire pushes that disbelief even further.
• Alexis’s character development is compelling, but the story spends a significant amount of time on her insecurities. Even when Blake shows genuine interest, she assumes it is temporary and doubts her ability to keep the attention of someone like him.
• The emphasis on Alexis being a virgin feels excessive. The characters discuss it repeatedly, and it becomes a distraction rather than a meaningful part of her arc.
Audiobook Performance
The story is told through multiple points of view but performed by a single narrator, Erin Bennett. Her voice is pleasant and her delivery suits the tone of the book. However, a dual or duet narration would have added more emotional depth and distinction between characters. One enjoyable aspect of the experience was reading the book while listening to the audiobook at the same time, which enhanced immersion.
Final Opinion
This installment in the Ace Security series delivers a satisfying mix of romance, danger, and emotional growth. Alexis’s journey from self doubt to self assurance is engaging, and her chemistry with Blake is warm and believable. The undercover plot adds excitement, even if it occasionally strains realism. The audiobook performance is solid, though a second narrator would have elevated the experience. Overall, this is an enjoyable romantic suspense story with heartfelt moments, strong character development, and enough tension to keep the pages turning.
