He Sees You When You’re Sleeping by Alta Hensley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It’s the night before Christmas and I’m alone in the house…

Popular jewelry influencer Chloe Hallman is steeling herself to spend another holiday on her own. Instead, she finds herself drawn to two different guys… a smoldering hot fan of her secret, seductive online persona, and a sexy fireman named Jack who looks out for her in their NYC neighborhood.

She has no idea that I know her better than she knows herself. Her deepest secrets, her darkest desires—she’s careful, but I’ve been watching, never leaving footprints in the snow outside her home.

Jack was the first responder to the accident that stole a beautiful young woman’s family two Christmases ago, and he’s been quietly guarding her ever since. When Jack uncovers Chloe’s secret account, his obsession only grows. Both he and Chloe are drawn to the darkness that mirrors their own.

She’s my Christmas wish come true. And I’m hers. She just doesn’t know it yet.

Will Chloe’s Christmas be a tale of fiery passion…or a dangerous game with a man whose love knows no bounds?

📚 Character Background & Plot Dynamics

Chloe is doing her best to fake holiday cheer, even though Christmas has lost its sparkle for her. She’s decorated her home, she’s posting festive content, and she’s fulfilling her role as a social‑media jewelry influencer and brand ambassador for Moth to the Flame—a company that thrives during the holiday rush. But behind the curated joy, she’s grieving. Since losing her parents, the season feels hollow, and the idea of spending Christmas with her aunt in a house full of memories is more than she can handle. So, she lies about having plans and chooses solitude instead.

Everything shifts when she sees her elderly neighbor, Mr. Haven, fall while shoveling his walkway. She rushes out to help and meets Jack, a handsome firefighter who steps in to finish the shoveling. Chloe is surprised—her landlord usually handles her snow removal and even put up her Christmas lights. But Mr. Haven reveals that it wasn’t the landlord at all.

It was Jack.

What Chloe doesn’t know is that Jack has been quietly orbiting her life for two years. He was a first responder at her parents’ accident, and something about her grief, her strength, and her loneliness lodged itself deep inside him. His “helpfulness” is genuine… but it’s also a cover. Shoveling hides his footprints. Footprints that lead to her windows. Jack isn’t just the sweet, shy firefighter she meets in the snow—he’s been watching her far longer than she realizes.

🌟 Highlights

• Chloe runs a secret second social‑media account—one that’s far more aligned with her true tastes. Under the name Chlo, she showcases darker, edgier jewelry with BDSM‑inspired designs, gothic aesthetics, and collar-style pieces. It’s a sharp contrast to the polished, wholesome brand‑ambassador persona she presents publicly.
• Chloe repeatedly assumes Jack is too “vanilla” for her, even after he hints that he’s not afraid of the dark. Her stubborn misread of him adds tension and irony, especially given how wrong she is.

⤵️ Low Points

• Jack’s characterization is a bit contradictory. He’s a gentle, socially awkward firefighter who saves lives… yet he’s also a voyeuristic stalker with a shadowy, obsessive streak and a surprisingly kinky side. The blend doesn’t always feel seamless.
• Stories where the heroine works in the sex industry—whether stripping, escorting, or camming—aren’t my favorite, and Chloe’s secret account leans heavily into explicit content. In some ways, it’s even more provocative than traditional sex‑work portrayals.
• The pacing drags at times. Chloe and Jack date sweetly in person while simultaneously interacting as anonymous, sexually charged strangers online. The duality is interesting, but the prolonged delay before the reveal makes the story feel stretched. I found myself wanting them to drop the façades and meet each other honestly—darkness and all.

🎙️ Narration

Told through dual POV with dual narration, the audiobook features Jillian Macie and Rock Engle. Jillian delivers a warm, expressive performance that fits Chloe perfectly—youthful, emotional, and nuanced. Rock Engle’s voice is pleasant and well-suited to Jack’s outward persona, though not inherently “dark.” Still, because Jack has two sides to him, the contrast works, and Engle handles the shifts with subtlety.

💬 Final Thoughts

This audiobook blends holiday melancholy, hidden identities, and a stalker‑romance twist into a story that’s equal parts tender and unsettling. While the pacing can feel uneven and some character choices may not appeal to every listener, the dual‑life dynamic and the tension between who these characters are versus who they pretend to be give the story a compelling emotional core. If you enjoy romances with a darker edge, secret personas, and a slow burn toward truth, this one may hit the spot—just be prepared for a mix of sweetness, shadow, and a few morally gray turns along the way.
