Sweet Little Obsession: Love So Cruel, Book 1 by Teresa Wolf

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Teacher by day, stalker by night.

Who ever thought college could be this interesting?

I’m teaching a hundred students. But my eyes are only on one. She’s my obsession—and I’ll stop at nothing to make her mine.

I followed her back to her apartment. Then I broke in while she was asleep.

She wants me. I can feel it when I touch her. But she can’t know who I am.

I’m her new step-brother.

My family’s enemies are legion, and our little game puts her right in the firing line. But protecting her is what big brothers are for, right?

The more we fight, the more I want her. And my nocturnal visits make her want me, too.

Am I her guardian angel? Or a devil in disguise?

📚 Character Background and Plot Dynamics

Seth is on the cusp of finishing his doctorate at Columbia, and while academia doesn’t call to him, his mentor insists he try teaching. His first class—Psychology 101—is massive, which suits him just fine. But the moment he spots a petite blonde with striking blue eyes, the room shrinks to just the two of them. Her name, he soon learns, is Ava Gibson. And Seth, who grew up learning how to stalk from his father, wastes no time following her home to uncover more.

Ava’s life is far from glamorous. She’s a senior living in a rundown off‑campus apartment furnished with thrift-store finds. Her ex-boyfriend, Vincent, still calls and texts despite their long-ago breakup. And she’s dreading dinner with her estranged mother—a woman who ignored her for years and only resurfaced after Ava’s father was murdered. Now engaged to a reputed mobster with a suspiciously shiny tech empire, her mother expects Ava to meet her fiancé and his two sons.

When one of those sons turns out to be the TA from Ava’s psychology class, the shock is mutual. Seth is horrified that the girl he’s already fixated on is about to become his stepsister. He’s equally unsettled by the tension between Ava and her mother, and by the secrets swirling around both families. Seth’s father is a man with shadows in his past—shadows Seth suspects may intersect with Ava’s. He needs to know what she knows, what she isn’t saying, and whether their parents’ marriage is more than coincidence.

🌟 Highlights

• This isn’t a straightforward stalker romance. The story threads in multiple mysteries: the death of Seth’s mother, the murder of Ava’s father, the suspiciously convenient engagement between their parents, and the dangerous connections lurking beneath it all.
• Ava’s ex, Vincent Bernardi, is the adopted son of one of the city’s most ruthless crime families, adding another layer of tension and danger. Her desire to date a “bad boy” certainly delivered more than she bargained for.
• The intersecting family secrets and criminal undercurrents give the plot a broader scope than the typical obsessive-romance setup.

⤵️ Low Points

• The writing style feels simplistic and occasionally juvenile. The story opens by immediately labeling Seth as a deviant, but the execution reads more like someone insisting he’s dark rather than actually showing it.
• Given the author’s extensive backlist and the book’s recent publication date, the lack of nuance in the prose and character development is surprising.

🎙️ Narration

The audiobook uses dual POVs with dual narrators: Chloe Ryan and Theo Sinclair.

• Chloe Ryan delivers a soft, youthful tone that fits Ava well. Her performance feels natural and grounded.
• Theo Sinclair has a pleasant voice, but his delivery leans too casual for a character meant to embody danger, obsession, and emotional volatility. The mismatch softens Seth’s intended edge.

💬 Final Thoughts

This audiobook blends stalker romance with family intrigue, mob ties, and long-buried secrets, creating a plot that’s more layered than expected. While the premise is compelling and the mystery elements add welcome depth, the execution doesn’t always rise to meet the story’s potential. The writing lacks the sophistication needed to fully sell Seth’s darkness or the emotional complexity of the characters’ tangled histories. Still, the dual narration and the web of interconnected mysteries keep the story engaging enough for fans of obsessive romance with a criminal twist.

💭 Quotes

“I have no desire to bombard her with texts and phone calls. That’s too much work.”

“Because I don’t know how anyone could know you and not love you, Ava Gibson. I’d burn down the fucking world for you.”

“I’ll fuck her every night and every morning. And a few times in between.”
