The Last Girl by Kitty Thomas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Six years ago strangers broke into Juliette’s house; she was home alone and only thirteen. She kept her eyes closed, praying that if she didn’t see anything, she wouldn’t be killed. No one harmed her. In fact, one of the thieves protected her. Now Juliette’s dreams are haunted by him.
The Last Girl
Christian has waited to take her, resisting the urge each night. It always ends badly with human pets. They’re too fragile. The longer he can wait, the better, because the moment he takes her, the clock on her life starts ticking down.
Then she’ll be gone forever.

🦸🏼♀️ The Heroine: Juliette
Juliette is haunted by the night her childhood innocence shattered. At thirteen, left home alone, she opened the door to danger: armed strangers searching for secrets hidden in her parents’ safe. Terrified, she hid in a closet, listening as voices debated whether to kill her. When the intruders left, one remained — Christian. He sat beside her, promised no harm, and vanished with a chilling warning never to speak of that night. The memory lingers, shaping her fears and her future.
🦸🏻♂️ The Hero: Christian
Christian is no ordinary man — he’s a 700-year-old vampire with a history of destroying every human companion he’s ever taken. Determined to resist Juliette, he tells himself he’ll stay away. Yet he knows the truth: every day he resists is another day she lives, and the moment he claims her, her countdown begins. His struggle is both tragic and terrifying, a predator battling his own hunger.
📚 The Plot
Years later, Juliette is a college student still plagued by nightmares. She finds solace in her mother’s bakery, the only place that feels safe. Her parents’ divorce remains a mystery, though she suspects it ties back to the stolen documents from that fateful night.
Juliette’s attempt at normalcy includes her boyfriend, Devon. Ready to take a step forward in their relationship, she plans to lose her virginity. But the evening spirals into horror when Devon blindfolds her for a surprise at the beach — only for another hand to lead her away. Frozen in fear, Juliette recognizes the face behind the touch: the man from her nightmares.
🌟 What Worked
• The premise is compelling, blending danger, desire, and supernatural tension.
• The steam factor is undeniable, adding intensity to the story.
💔 What Fell Short
• The pacing felt rushed; more background and buildup would have deepened the impact.
• Christian’s treatment of Juliette is jarringly cruel. For someone who claims she’s unique — the only human immune to his thrall, the girl who touched his face in defiance — his harshness undermines the emotional stakes. His insistence that they’ll never be equals, paired with threats of killing her once he’s “done,” makes him difficult to root for.
🎙️ Narration
Told in multiple POVs, the duet narration adds dimension. Laurie West’s soft, delivery shines, bringing warmth to Juliette’s voice, though she felt a bit wooden at times. Christian Black’s deep tone fits the character but also feels stiff, more read than lived. Still, the duet format elevates the listening experience, making character voices distinct and immersive.
💬 Final Thoughts
A dark, seductive premise with flashes of intensity, but the execution left me wanting more depth, more emotion, and more balance between cruelty and connection. The narration helps, but the story itself could have lingered longer in its shadows before rushing into the heat.
