Audiobook Review: Veils (The Killers, #4) by Brynne Asher. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Veils by Brynne Asher

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Give me a memory, Noah.”

That’s what she said … the woman who rendered me stupid in the shadows at a wedding reception. I did everything I could to figure her out. She wore more veils of armor than I’ve seen in a lifetime. On the outside, she was strong and self-assured. But within those beautiful, guarded blues? She was laced with vulnerability and grief.

We had one night. The best night. She got the memory she wanted, but in the process, I was left branded.

Then she thought she could strut out my front door and my life, right after announcing she was my boss’s baby sister.

I had no choice but to follow. Not only did I go after her, I chased her halfway around the world. Because when it comes to her, one memory isn’t enough. It doesn’t matter that there couldn’t be a more opposite pair than us.

Gracie Cain is a healer. I’m Noah Jarvis, a cold-hearted killer.

But when my job came back to bite me in the ass, I wasn’t the only one caught in the crossfire. It bought us memories no one was counting on.

That’s when all the veils were ripped off.

🧍🏽 Noah Jarvis – The Reluctant Legend

A former Navy SEAL turned elite mercenary, Jarvis operates with Crew Vega’s secretive team—former assassins now taking covert contracts from government agencies like the CIA. While Vega, Asa, and Grady have retired to train rookies, Jarvis remains active, thriving on international action and detesting downtime. At a Virginia winery wedding, he crosses paths with Gracie Cain—and sparks fly the instant he lays eyes on her.

🧍🏻‍♀️ Gracie Cain – The Unbreakable Wanderer

Gracie is gearing up for a global medical mission, but today she’s simply visiting her friend Addy—only to find herself underdressed at a surprise wedding. She meets a scarred, charismatic stranger who confesses his rare visits to the U.S. Their mutual attraction is undeniable, but for Gracie, this is a one-night detour from a path paved with past pain: a toxic relationship, a lingering stalker, and the resilience she’s earned through it all.

📖 The Story

What begins with flirtation quickly turns magnetic. Noah speaks with raw desire, and Gracie—craving distraction before chasing her dream—lets herself indulge. Their night together pulses with chemistry and vulnerability. When Gracie reveals she’s leaving for Uganda, and that she’s Grady’s sister, Noah’s reaction is complicated. But this isn’t goodbye. Noah’s protective instincts kick in, and even as Gracie battles secrets and danger abroad, he refuses to let her go.

👍 Highlights

• 🔥 Sizzling intimate scenes with emotional depth
• 🌍 Engaging international settings—Belgium, Uganda, Turkey, and more
• 🕵️ Suspense, mystery, and relentless pursuit as Noah follows Gracie
• 💘 The “cold assassin melts for one woman” trope, executed with genuine heart

👎 Room for Improvement

• 😬 Noah’s use of the word “Lover” feels cringey and distracting
• 📖 Details of Gracie’s trauma are referenced before readers are fully clued in
• 🤐 After her rescue, Gracie delays revealing critical information to Noah—frustrating given the stakes

🎙️ Narration Notes

Told through dual POVs, this audiobook features stellar narration from Kit Swann and Jason Clarke. Clarke’s deep, gravelly voice adds edge and sexiness to Jarvis’s character—his range keeps things fresh and immersive. Swann’s expressive delivery enhances Gracie’s emotional layers, and impressively, her male character voicing holds up well—avoiding the common pitfalls of female narrators sounding overly forced.

💬 Quote

“He’s a voracious lover; selfless yet with just enough edge to make it so hot. I’m almost sad to think that this might possibly be the best I’ll ever have.”

“Sweet Jesus, NFL playoffs, and thick cut hickory smoked bacon, this girl just dropped to her knees.”

“I knew you were big, but you’re BIG.”

“I’ll never forget you, but I need you to forget me.”
