Hunter’s Valentine
I thought I was ready when the apocalypse came, but I wasn’t prepared for dirty bunker politics. Realizing I’m no longer welcomed, I step foot into a hostile landscape, ready to face down the deadly space bugs in search of a new home.
It’s just my luck that I run afoul of a massively muscular, horned and fanged Xarc’n warrior on my very first day out. Mur’k carries me back to his hideout, claiming that I owe him for messing up his hunt.
Nope! No way! I didn’t survive the bugs just to become some cocky warrior’s plaything. I don’t care if he’s hot as sin and purrs like a big cat. I’m going to make it to New Franklin on my own if it’s the last thing I do!
Terrific Xarc’n warrior story!

The heroine: Sara – since the bugpocalypse began a year ago, she had been living in a bunker under a mansion with a group of other people. The owners of the mansion and the bunker were basically in charge and invited other people that had necessary skills, and everybody brought a bunch of supplies including Sara. Her skill was as a midwife since the couple in charge were pregnant when the alien bugs invaded. However, after the baby was born and the husband started showing an interest in Sam, the wife blamed her and started to spread rumors that she had been stealing supplies.
The Hero: Mur’k – He wasn’t on earth to find a mate like other hunters. He lived for the hunt and was only out to kill more. He had been setting a trap for the scourge the past few days and today was the day he was springing it. He had been luring a gathering of the alien bugs into a particular street in town where he had laid his traps, but when they were just blocks away, they caught the scent of something else and veered the wrong way.
The story: Sara had overheard the people in the bunker talking about kicking her out soon, so she stole some supplies, which she didn’t feel guilty about, since she came in with so much and she foraged for a lot of the supplies. Plus, if she was being kicked out for being a thief anyway, she might as well. She planned to head towards New Franklin where some other survivors had a settlement.
When the incoming swarm of alien insects caught Sara unaware, she did her best to get out of the situation by throwing her bag full of rotting meat to distract them. She then tried to hightail it out of there, even knowing that the meat only gave her a few seconds. Mur’k was not happy to see that a human had gotten the bug’s attention since he was on par to beat his personal best with this large group of the menacing bugs, and that was now ruined. Though when he smelled a lone female, he decided he should save her.
This was a novella in the Xarc’n Warrior world, and though it wasn’t technically one of the series, it probably should have been. I really enjoyed the story, and the two characters were both great. They had a lot of chemistry from the start. I am always surprised at how some authors can do a terrific storyline and some steamy scenes in a novella and others just seem like a really short book, missing elements. This was definitely one of the good ones.
