Audiobook Review: Hard Days Night (The Firsts, #8) by C.L. Quinn. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hard Days Night by C.L. Quinn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My name is Mal. I’m a cop in Los Angeles. I can tell you, I thought I’d seen everything…turns out, I was wrong. One night, on a forced vacation, watching a sunset on a lovely beach, I intercepted a call for a homicide. It wasn’t my jurisdiction, but I decided to respond until the locals could get there. I secured the scene on a lonely stretch of road near the ocean where a naked man had been shot in the head. God, the man was perfect, big, sexy, I had to stop myself from touching him and contaminating the crime scene. I promised him that we’d find his killer. It broke my heart that such a magnificent man was dead. He was dead, yes…but apparently, not permanently. What the hell? I fell backwards in shock when he took a breath. No, in all of my years on the street, this, I had never seen! Then the night got much more interesting when he abducted me!

The last thing that Ahmose expected when he finished a swim in the sparkling Pacific Ocean was to get a bullet in the head. To be fair, if he’d expected it, it would never have happened. Now, as he revives from the gunshot, a beautiful detective is insisting that she needs to call for an ambulance to help him. He needs her help, but not like that. Blood, and plenty of it, is all he requires to heal from a simple death.

Hard Days Night

Terrific story with lots of action!

The heroine: Mal – a detective on the Los Angeles police force, Mal is very close with her partner Luca. They are like brother and sister, they love each other, but it is totally non-sexual. They work well together and lately have been working a case against a very bad man named Jinx who seems to always get off of any charges filed against him. While staking out the docks after getting some intel on Jinx and how his organization has been shipping out drugs and human cargo, Mal is kidnapped by Jinx’s boss, whom she finds out is very informed on everything in her life. He threatens he partner and her father if she doesn’t back down and she knows he would follow through. Her and Luca are forced to take vacation since they haven’t taken any for years. They go on vacation at a beach house owned by a friend.

The Hero: Ahmose – He is the leader of the children of the moon, the first blood vampires that live near Victoria Falls in Zambia. They live in a village hidden by magic. He had recently found a woman he thought would be his mate, but it turned out she was the mate of another. Though he has been able to have children with her since she is a Shoazan (able to bear the children of a first blood). A seer has foreseen that she would have 3 children by Ahmose, so they have inseminated her and so far have 1 child and she is pregnant with a second. Ahmose needed some time away from all of his responsibilities so he is on vacation at the beach when he is shot by some young men who are hunting vampires, possibly hired by Lamont, who Ahmose had been chasing.

The Story: Mal is at her beach house, listening to the police radio, when she hears a call about a body on the beach and she hears the responding officer can’t make it for a while, so she calls in and says she can go to the scene until the officer can arrive. They agree and she finds the huge naked man with the gunshot wound. He is the most handsome man she had ever seen and she thinks what a waste. But soon after that, the dead man woke and Mal didn’t know what was happening.

A lot happens in this book. Mal has the biggest case of her life and a bunch of things happen to her while she is compelled by Ahmose. Ahmose ends up returning home and Mal only remembers that she was kidnapped and drugged. So much more action happens throughout the book and a lot of people come into the story, both good and bad. This was another great story that I really enjoyed. Another thing I like about this series is that the intimate scenes are hot, but not overly long. Sometimes I get in the mood for smut, but more often I like a really good story with just a few sexy scenes, and that is what this series has been for me.

This audiobook was told in multiple points of view and was narrated in solo narration by Pyper Down. I usually hate solo narration, but I like her voice and she is great with different voices and accents so you can easily tell what character is speaking at any given time. I have really been enjoying the audiobooks in this series despite the solo narration.
