Dominick by Eve Langlais
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
When she called him a pussycat, she didn’t mean it literally.
Dominick
There comes a time in every man’s life where he’s got to choose: settle down or get smacked by his mom for not giving her grandbabies. After all, he’s not getting any younger, although age isn’t why he retired from the military.
After the incident they had no choice but to medically discharge him. Probably for the best because something inside him is struggling to break free.
Adrift and on the prowl, he runs into his high school crush, Anika. She’s still as beautiful as before, meaning of course he puts his foot in his mouth, down his throat, and out his…
Yeah, he’s still an idiot around her. He can’t help himself despite knowing he should stay away. The blackouts have started up again, resulting in a loss of clothes and a raw diet.
Discovering he’s a giant freaking cat isn’t easy to accept, especially since his family’s idea of sympathy is offering him a can of tuna and dangling a string.
They won’t laugh for long once they realize he can’t control the beast.
Only love can tame him.

The Hero: Dominick – he was born in a lab. The scientists were experimenting on children, but if the kids didn’t manifest an ability by a certain age, the guy in charge told the scientists to terminate them. Though the lead scientist wouldn’t do that, so he found them a home. So, Dominick and his eight foster siblings grew up on a farm with their Mom, who was a wonderful lady and a great cook. Dominick joined the military after high school and retired at thirty-seven when his inner rage started growing and started having blackouts and having nightmares about being a large jungle cat. He got a medical discharge. He now lives back at home on the farm but is looking for something to do with his life.
The heroine: Anika – she went to high school with Dominick, though she didn’t really like him at the time. She was married for a few years, but her ex-husband was a jerk who was not at all happy when she filed for divorce. He laid false claims against her, and she ended up losing her dental hygienist license. She had to get a job as a grocery store clerk for little money and lived in a small apartment.
The Story: When Dominick sees Anika in the grocery store, he remembers what a crush he had on her in high school. He still thinks she is attractive, but he has a bad habit of putting his foot in his mouth around her and ends up offending her more than once. They have a rocky start to their relationship, but it isn’t long before their attraction to each other overrules any bad feelings, and they hook up.
I liked both of these characters and especially liked the fact that Dominick had no idea about what he was. This was quite different than the usual shifter story or genetically engineered human story. I liked the difference and am looking forward to the next few books as well. I really enjoyed when they started to figure out what they were. Of course, everything isn’t smooth and easy. There are some conflicts in this story, but overall I really liked the story.
This audiobook was told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Grace Grant. I usually hate solo narration but was able to get this book as part of a box set, so I picked it up. Grace Grant is a pretty good narrator, she has a nice voice and her voice for the male characters isn’t bad either.
