The Trainer by Leslie Georgeson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
She’s the daughter of a powerful gang leader. I’m the unsuspecting dreg who finds her hiding in my truck. Does she need my help…or is she there to kill me?
The Trainor
I am the only person in the world who can communicate with anyone, anytime, anywhere. In any language. Because I have the ability to learn a new dialect in mere seconds.
Yet, when I discover a feisty Asian beauty hiding in the bed of my truck, words fail me. For once, the linguist is speechless.
She’s tiny. Exquisite. A warrior. And I can’t look away.
Until she reveals the truth: Her father is the leader of one of the most powerful gangs in Augusta. The Black Dragons.
Is she too a member of the gang? Is she setting me up? I need answers. And she’s keeping her secrets.
Now I am the target, and she is the prize.
The gangs are coming for us.
They want her. I need her.
This time, my language skills won’t save me.
But giving her up is not in my vocabulary.
Such a great super-soldier series!

The Hero: Logan (a.k.a. The Trainer) – he was kidnapped as a thirteen-year-old boy, by a crazy general who was trying to create a team of super soldiers. The general and the other people that worked for “The Company”, experimented on the boys to create The Dregs, a new kind of soldier. The boys were kept prisoner in cells with only their cell mate to talk to. The ones that survived, developer supernatural abilities and a deep bond with their cell mate. Noah and Logan became best friends and leaned on each other through the worst times. They have since escaped captivity and live in a maze deep below a crumbling mansion on a Georgia plantation. The Company is still searching for them, and they have some gangs after them as well, hired by The Company and wanting to get back at the Dregs for what happened in the earlier books.
“I became one of the chosen. A rare breed. One of the few soldiers with special “powers.” I had the uncanny ability to learn—to understand and speak —any language after only hearing a few sentences spoken in that language. My brain was like a built-in translator.”
“The soldiers attacked me then. Blow after painful blow. They taught me a lesson I would never forget.
Don’t fall in love. Never have a weakness.”
“Noah ended up being my permanent partner. He stuck beside me. Supported me. He was a good guy. The best, in fact. He was also one of the chosen and ended up with a special talent of his own. He, like me, was a rare breed. A dreg. Together, Noah and I persevered. We overcame all the obstacles that were thrown at us. He gave me the strength to move on.”
The heroine: Nishi – she is daughter of Katashi Yamamoto the Lord of the Black Dragons gang. They are one of the large gangs that have taken over in Augusta Georgia. They are deadly because of their training and fighting style like Ninja’s of old. She grew up with a single mother in Japan, until she was sixteen and her father stole her away and forced her to become a shadow warrior. Nishi has wanted to escape the gang ever since and finally sees her chance when a new member of the gang is assigned as her guard, and he want her more than he fears her father. She uses his lust for her to knock him out and escapes on his watch. She knows she must escape now, as she just found out that her father has auctioned off her virginity and hand in marriage to the leader of one of the other gangs, so that he can get more power through an alliance.
“I had been planning my escape for eight years now. Eight years.
Every prior attempt had never gotten beyond the thinking stage. Because there really was no way to escape my father.
But tonight, during fight practice, I had overheard a terrifying secret. And the painful, bitter truth had struck home.
If I didn’t find some way to escape soon, I would never be free.”“I wasn’t supposed to know about the auction or the arranged marriage—probably so I wouldn’t attempt to escape like I was doing right now—but I had a secret of my own that even my father didn’t know about.
I was multi-lingual. I could speak English. Mama had made sure I learned not only her native language of Hindi, but also my father’s language of Japanese, and she’d wanted me to know English as well. As a result, my English was as good as my Hindi and my Japanese. Perhaps better.
My father thought I could only speak Hindi and Japanese. And I let him think that. No one in his gang knew I could speak English. Eavesdropping on conversations became a game to me. No one knew I understood what they were saying.
I was a good spy.”
The story: During the years Logan was held by The Company, they had also held women against their will, wanting the dregs to breed with the women in order to use the resulting children as the next level of super-soldier. Logan fell in love with the female he was assigned to, a Japanese woman named Himari, but they ended up being punished when he refused to get her pregnant. The General killed Himari in front of Logan. Now that Logan was free, after many of his Dreg brothers had fallen in love and moved away from the plantation where they hide, he remembers how amazing it was to have a woman’s love, but he refused endanger another woman.
Logan makes a trip to Eatonton for groceries one night, Nishi slips into the bed of his truck at a gas station. When he finds her, he doesn’t know what to do with her. He takes her to a hotel and gives her money for a few days, but he can’t stop thinking about the beautiful girl. When he calls her room to talk to her, he overhears the Black Dragons finding her and knows at once he made a mistake. Nishi is caught by her father and his men who, she finds out, have been paid a lot of money to kill all the Dregs, and they know she was dropped off at the hotel by one of the Dregs.
I loved the fact that Nishi was just a tiny woman, but she had a lot of fight in her. She was used to sparring and training with her fathers’ men, who never took it easy on her. After recapturing her, she had to endure torture as a punishment for escaping but they also used it to try to get any information she had on Logan, or the dregs and she withstood it without telling them anything. I also liked the fact that she was open and gregarious with Logan, she was a very likable heroine.
Like all the previous books, there was a lot of action and scenes of the dregs coming up against their enemies. It seems to me that as soon as the guys get rid of one enemy or group of enemies, that more just pop up. In this book there are still some shareholders behind the super-soldier project that want them dead, then there are the Black Dragon’s who are being paid by the shareholders to kill the Dregs, and Malik, the head of the Rapster’s gang, who wanted them dead for killing his brother, and now has more of a reason to want them dead, since he was the one who purchased Nishi and planned to marry her. Though I did get bored during a few parts of this book. I think it might just have been my mood, but it didn’t happen during the first three books in this series.
