Kye by Nyssa Kathryn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes it’s in the depths of hell, that one finds their angel.

Samantha Jacobs thought she was aiding her government. She believed the chip she created, the one that could change the world, would be used for the good of mankind. But it was all a lie…and she discovered the truth too late. Now, Samantha will suffer dearly for her mistake.

Former SEAL Kye Hade has been hunting the people behind Project Arma for years. He never expected to fall back into their hands, waking in a cage alongside a beautiful, brainy woman.

The enemy wants the unthinkable—and the clock is ticking. Freedom won’t come without a fight, but when your rivals have proven they don’t die easily, Kye and Samantha might just pay the ultimate price.

The heroine: Samantha – she was a biomedical engineer with a PhD in physics who thought she was working for a top-secret government project when things about the project and her boss Hylar didn’t make sense to her. She had gotten her best friend Tori involved, and Tori was nearly murdered. Samantha was able to destroy her work on a microchip that could be implanted in someone’s brain and used to control that person, but Hylar and his goons had beaten and tortured her, then Tori and Tori’s boyfriend Oliver to get her to remake the chip. That was when Olivers SEAL team came in to rescue them. Though Samantha wasn’t rescued, she was taken again.

The Hero: Kye – he is a former Navy SEAL who, along with his SEAL teammates, was part of Project Arma and was given drugs without his consent that changed his DNA, making him stronger, faster and with other enhanced abilities. He and his former teammates own a company called Marble Protection in Marble Falls. When they fought in the final battle with their former commander Hylar who was behind everything that was done to them, they were able to kill Hylar, but his right-hand man, Carter got away and not long after that, Kye was taken captive.

The Story: Kye and Samantha were held in a possible former CIA black site, in cells next to each other. Each day Samantha was taken into a small lab to recreate the microchip and remote controller that would allow Carter and whomever he was working with to control any number of enhanced and/or human soldiers. One day while in the lab, Samantha overheard a woman giving Carter orders to make sure Samantha finished her work quickly.

This was a pretty good story, though it seems like each time the team gets rid of their main enemy, another pops up in their place. This time, all they know about the enemy is that it is a woman, so they don’t much of a choice but to wait for that woman to make another move and make herself known. I also liked the storyline about Samantha’s PTSD and nightmares. There is another side story about a reporter bothering Samantha about the guys.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Ramona Master and Gideon Frost. These two narrators also did the voices in the first book from this series but haven’t done any since. I like both of their voices and they both sounded very natural. Though neither were very good at doing different voices for different characters.
