The heroine: Jade – since the monsters invaded the city, there were rumors that they were terrible flying demons that kidnapped women after dark. City government had implemented a curfew for women, that they had to be indoors after sundown. Not all women followed the curfew, but they were strictly enforced. Companies closed well before sundown and there were patrols out after dark as well as drunk “nightmen” who didn’t care about women’s rights. Though Jade got stuck at work late one evening and had to either sleep on the office floor or brave the night and walk the twelve blocks to her apartment.
The Story: Jade was making her way home after sundown when she heard some nightmen coming around the corner, she ducked into an alley and hid behind a trash bin when she heard that they had a woman with them and were assaulting her. Jade knew if she tried to step in, her fate would be the same as that of the other woman, so she stayed quiet. Though she heard someone step in and tell the woman to run while he killed the three men. When Jade finally stepped out, she saw that it was a monster and that he had been shot during the scuffle. She felt she had to help him since he helped the woman. Three years later she found herself out after dark again, and though this time she was prepared, she ended up as a captive of the monsters.
The Hero: Thorin – he is an alpha and next in line to be a member of the council. Though he is lucky he still has alpha status since he has been kind of shirking his duties. It has been a long time since he has brought in a contribution female, though he has come across them on his hunts in the city. Also, he is supposed to breed an heir and has skipped the last two Seasons. Only male children are born, but when they discovered human females could carry their young, it was a way to keep their race alive. When he smells the female that he has wondered about for the last three years, since the night she saved him, he knows he needs to go to her and find out why.
I liked this book from the start, because these monsters were different than any I have read about in the past. They are Vampires, but they aren’t standard vampires. They have wings and horns and charcoal grey skin. I liked Thorin because he is trying to improve things for their race, which involves treating the females better since killing females is something that seems to happen pretty often and the females are becoming harder to find since curfew’s have been implemented.
This was different from a lot of paranormal romance, in that there wasn’t any idea of fated mates, plus so many of the monster’s world wasn’t conducive to loving relationship between a monster and a human female. They had to figure out ways to keep Jade safe from the others that care nothing for the lives of the human females. It made for quite an interesting story.
