Gorgeous alien commanders don’t fall for Earth girls with criminal records. Do they?
Protected by the Alien Commander
I’ve got a list of regrets a mile long, starting with the time I went to jail and ending with the fact that not long after I got out, I was abducted by alien smugglers. As if that isn’t bad enough, a split-second decision when their ship crashes nearly costs me my life.
And when I wake up after the crash, everything has changed.
I’m no longer being held captive by brutal space pirates. Instead, I’ve been rescued by a group of alien warriors called Zivonians. Their leader, Ryven, claims he wants to help me, offering me safe haven on their massive ship.
I know how the universe works, though. You never get something for nothing, so there has to be a catch somewhere. Despite the temptation to trust this powerful, handsome warrior, I know I can’t afford to open up my heart.
But when I make a mistake and have to face the consequences of my actions, the only one willing to stand up for me… is Ryven.
Everyone I knew back on Earth saw me as nothing but the sum total of my screw-ups, but Ryven looks at me differently.
He looks at me like someone worth protecting. Someone worth fighting for. Someone worth loving.
Will he still feel that way when he finds out about my past?
Good, but standard alien romance!

The heroine: Kate – she wakes up in some kind of pod, with males looking at her and talking, but she can’t understand them. They kind of look human but also not. They have chameleon-like skin that changes color from green to tan. She sees her sister, who died, and she feels a lot of guilt about her death. She tried to take care of her sick sister Rebecca; Kate had to steal and do small crimes to pay the bills, but she couldn’t save her sister. After Rebecca died, she lost her apartment and ended up in a cheap motel where she was abducted by aliens. When they crash landed, she was impaled by something.
The Hero: Ryven – He is attracted to Kate from the start. He keeps telling her that she is safe, but he can tell that she can’t understand him. Her inner ear was damaged in the crash, so despite having a translator implanted, she is unable to hear or understand her. He feels protective of her, and it bothers him because he usually only feels protective of the Zivonian people that he is in charge of as commander of his ship and highest ranking Zivonian left alive.
The story: Ryven never wanted to be the leader of the last of his people, but when the Krull attacked and laid waste to Zivon, he was the highest ranking official alive who managed to make it onto the Oasis and he now takes his duty seriously and will do anything to keep his people safe. The Krull now outnumber the Zivonians and he wants to seek out other Zivonians that may be out there as well as keep his people fed and alive.
I liked this book. It was pretty standard alien romance. The alien species was basically decimated and not many of their women are left, and they come across some human women and find they can be mates. It was definitely not original, but I like alien romance and I am pretty used to this storyline. This was better than some, not as good as others. I do like it when a bit more originality is brought to the mix. I didn’t exactly like at the beginning how Kate was feeling sorry for herself because her sister died and she had to turn to crime to pay the hospital bills. When she was traveling with a race of people who lost most of their population and their planet in a terrible war and were still being hunted. You would think she would see that as a “others have it worse than me” moment.
This audiobook was narrated in dual points of view via dual narration. Stephanie Kay and C.J. Grey narrated the audiobook and do a nice job. C.J. Grey has a deep, gravelly voice and speaks in a slow tempo which works well for an alien romance. Stephanie Kay has a youthful sounding voice, and sounds very natural, not like she is reading. She is great at sounding anxious.
