Prisoner by Annika Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
He seethes with raw power the first time I see him—pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He’s dangerous. He’s wild. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
Prisoner
So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it’s getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can’t stop thinking about him in his cell.
But that’s the thing about an animal in a cage—you never know when he’ll bite. He might use you to escape. He might even pull you into a forest and hold a hand over your mouth so you can’t call for the cops. He might make you come so hard, you can’t think.
And you might crave him more than your next breath.
Terrific captive romance!

The heroine: Abby Winslow – she is a college sophomore, and her project is teaching an English class at a prison. While other students got to teach high schoolers or old people in a retirement home, she got a prison. She disliked it because though everyone sees her a prim and proper, she feels like she isn’t so different from the men in prison. She comes from the slums and wants to stay far away from the bad memories of her past.
The Hero: Grayson Caine – He was convicted of killing a cop, which he didn’t do, not that he was innocent of other crimes. He had no contact with the outside world, sentenced to a prison far away from his crew. In the past, he’s been told he was beautiful, which he always hated. Though when Miss Winslow looked at him in a certain way, he didn’t mind. So, he finagled his way into her class.
The story: Abby is attracted to Grayson right away and she is especially wary when he shows up in her class. He bribed his way into her class when he heard that she would be posting their work on the internet, which he doesn’t have access to on a regular basis. He knew that all he had to do was put some code words into his work and his crew would immediately know what to do and who to bribe to get what he wants, and what he wants is to escape.
“There’s something that connects us. Like underground electric lines.”
“Maybe nobody has ever caught her, but I would. I would catch her, I would keep her, make her mine.”
“i’ve never met a woman like her and let’s just say, I’ve met a lot of women.”
“You’re either weak or strong. And I’m stronger than whatever is between me and Miss Winslow. I have to be if I want to get out of this place.”
“Those were his brown eyes, staring back at me from a milk carton.”
“I’m not going to turn into a good guy because her c*nt is made of velvet and rainbows.”
I really enjoyed this book. The Hero was morally grey, but overall, he was a good man who just wanted to cherish the heroine in the only way he knew. I also really liked his crew. They all survived extremely traumatic childhoods together and wanted revenge and then to make sure other kids didn’t suffer the same fate as they did. I tend to love it when characters get their revenge on terrible people who have done horrible things. I know vengeance isn’t supposed to be a good thing, but some people really deserve the karma.
This audiobook was told in two points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Jacob Morgan and Lauren Sweet. Jacob Morgan is one of my favorite male narrators and always does a great job. He has a nice deep gravelly voice and sounds so natural; not like he is reading at all. He is one narrator I could listen to non-stop, and he sounds so sexy in the intimate scenes. Lauren Sweet is not one of my favorites. Her voice annoys me a bit. She also sounds a bit too perky and sounds a bit loud when she is voicing different characters.
