Audiobook Review: Awakened by her Bear (Black Ridge Bears, #5). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Awakened by her Bear by Felicity Heaton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Decades in captivity and hundreds of fights in the arena have molded Maverick into a bear with a bad attitude and a dark hunger for violence. Twenty years later and he’s still trying to let go of his past and move on, but a phone call sets him on a collision course with a female from his time at the compound–the one female he always wanted but could never have, and thought he would never see again–a beautiful bear who stirs desires best denied and wrecks his rigid control.

When Bronwyn receives a video call from an Archangel huntress who has captured her brother, she’ll do anything to save him, even condemn another to suffer in the cages in his place. But when a familiar voice answers the number of the shifter she’s meant to bring in, hurling her back in time and rousing a fierce need that has only been growing in their years apart, can she lie to the only man she’s ever loved and lure him back into hell?

The heroine: Bronwyn (a.k.a. Winnie) – she is a black bear shifter who gets a bunch of ominous emails about her brother, detailing all the ways they would harm her brother if she didn’t do what they said. She knew it was Archangel that had captured her brother and were holding him in a compound again in a small cage and torturing him. She and her brother had been held in a place like that before and had been forced to fight in the Arena. Of all the members of her pride who were taken, only she and her brother had survived.

The Hero: Maverick – he and his brother Rune are grizzly bear shifters who were also held captive by Archangel, an anti-shifter group who liked to hold underground arena fights. He was held for more than twenty years and basically was raised in captivity, so he hasn’t been able to get over what happened to him, and he has anger management issues.

The Story: The hunters from Archangel wanted Bronwyn to make contact with someone with a phone they sent her. They promised to return her brother if she would make contact with the shifters and make them both agree to meet her. They said they would tell her what to do next after she got that done. Though she suspected they wanted her to help them capture another and take her brothers’ place. When she made the call, she immediately recognized Maverick’s voice on the other end of the phone. Maverick and his brother Rune were like brothers to her, and they hadn’t spoken to each other in the twenty years since they escaped from captivity.

Bronwyn had always had a crush on Maverick. But she had to do what Archangel said in order to save her brother. Maverick had always thought Winnie was too innocent to be exposed to him. Especially since he struggled with the violence that was now a part of his nature. I liked the storyline, though I always hate it when someone is in trouble in a book or movie and instead of telling their friends about what is going on so they can put their heads together and fix the situation, they instead do what the bad guys tell them to do and betray their friends. It is just stupidity to me. Beside that one point, I did really like this story quite a bit.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Troy Duran and Elizabeth Hart. Troy Duran is one of my favorite male narrators and I will listen to nearly anything he narrates; I love his voice. Elizabeth Hart does a good job but is not one of the female narrators I generally like. Her voice just has a quality that I don’t like. Maybe she reminds me of someone I am not fond of or something.
