Review: Chaos (Dogs of War, #1) by J.M. Madden. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chaos by J.M. Madden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Aiden Willingham has lived a hard life. As a Navy SEAL, he agreed to take part in an ultra-secret government testing program. The company running the program, the Silverstone Collaborative, has produced a serum from an Amazonian plant that’s been proven to enhance physical abilities and mental fortitude. Problem is, men– heroes– have died during the testing, and it’s time for the company to be taken down before more men die needlessly.
Aiden, along with three others, have escaped the camp with evidence of the company’s horrendous practices. Now they’re in a race to expose them. They’ve already lost one of their team, and the Collaborative’s mercenaries are converging.
Angela Holloway knew the homeless man with sadness in his eyes was trouble as soon as she saw him hanging around the site of a murder. Uncooperative, he stonewalls her investigation, but draws her in when the badge comes off. Aiden has scars, both internal and external, that make her heart ache. It’s a serious no-no getting involved with a suspect… too bad her heart isn’t listening. As details come to light about what’s going on in her city, she has to fight for what she believes is right, as well as the man on the wrong side of the law.

Chaos

Terrific storyline!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💚❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎
Character development: 😔🤨😛😁🥰

The Hero: Aiden – he was in the military, a Navy SEAL, and he volunteered to be a participant in the Spartan Project. It was a top-secret project that had delegates from different special forces branches of the military from a bunch of different countries. Their governments gave them away like animals to be used in experiments down in the Brazilian rainforest to create superior humans. The project was funded by a company called The Silverstone Collaborative and now that Aiden and his friends have escaped, they need to figure out how to stay hidden from the Collaborative while they try to take them down.

The heroine: Angela – she is a former Marine and now detective in Colorado. Her first case was that of a large pool of blood found in the alley where many of the homeless hang out. Too much blood for someone to walk away from, but no body was found, and the case went cold. So, when she sees another guy in a black hoodie hanging around that same alley, right where the blood pool had been found, she is suspicious. When he distracts her with a kiss and cuffs her to the fence, her blood starts to boil.

The Story: It has been two years since The Dogs of War escaped from the Amazon. Since then, they had each been doing their own things. Aiden was trying to decrypt one of the thumb drives they took from the research facility. T.J. had two others, Wulfe had been surveilling the headquarters of The Silverstone Collaborative, and Fontana had been distracting the company by going to many of their sites and burglarizing them and getting all up in their security. However, when T.J. came to Colorado to switch thumb drives with Aiden, he was murdered in that alley and Aiden felt tremendous guilt about it.

Aiden had first come to Colorado to possibly meet the brother he had recently discovered he had, but he stayed to protect that same brother and his family after Wulfe’s brother had nearly been kidnapped by the Collaborative. I liked the fact that Aiden was brought up in the foster care system and didn’t even know he had a brother, it gave his character some depth. I also liked the character of Angela, she was definitely a strong female, having been in the marines as an MP and now a detective.

I liked the story and loved the mental powers these guys have. I actually can’t wait for the next book because Fontana seems to have the strongest abilities and has worked on increasing his powers the most. Though I did like Aiden’s character quite a bit. He was obviously suffering from an extreme case of PTSD after all he went through, and Angela was such a strong character that she was perfect for helping him deal with it.

There were some real surprises in this book, I won’t even hint at what they were, but to say that this story wasn’t predictable at all. I really love it when I can be so utterly surprised. I loved all the action and the dangerous situations. There was a lot of suspense and intrigue and though I haven’t read the Lost and Found series, it was definitely easy to pick up the tie ins to that series since this one is a spin-off.
