Captive of the Royal Triad by Corin Cain
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I defied the brutal alien prince. By their harsh laws, my life is at the mercy of his royal triad. Bruton. Prince of the Aurelian Empire, eight-foot tall of brutal, muscled strength, flanked by the alien warriors of his triad. He is no royal. He is a savage, a colossal warlord who commands through pure violence.
Captive of the Royal Triad
And my fate is in his hands.
He believes I hold the keys to victory. His triad storms into my research station drenched in blood and sweat to judge my life’s work. And when my creations go haywire and nearly kill us all, the threat to the Prince must be answered. I’m hauled onto his warship, thrown into a cell, terrified and alone, when the cruel tyrant who put me behind bars comes to me with an offer.
Serve as the alien prince’s maid. Obey his orders, attend to him perfectly in front of his soldiers, pour the arrogant tyrant’s wine and mop his floors. One mistake, and I’ll face a different kind of discipline. Bruton has no time to hunt down his Fated Mate. His one focus is war. But when his nostrils flare and he tastes my scent, his blood boils. His eyes roll back, every thread of his body inflamed with a singular need. To claim me, to make me his, to Bond me to him for eternity. Prince Bruton is already wedded to death. My scent rips him in two, forcing him to choose between his war… And the chance that I could be his Fated Mate, the one woman in the universe who can bear his triad’s royal heirs. Terrific science fiction romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💜💖
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎
Character development: 🤨😟😳🥰
The heroine: Evelyn – though she is only 24 years old and human, she is the lead scientist in a vital project for the Aurelian Empire. She and her team are perfecting the Mark 10 cyborgs that might just be the key to defeating their enemies who they are at war with. The upcoming demonstration for Prince Bruton and his triad is of utmost importance and if they fail, it could mean her death. So, everyone on her team has been working themselves nearly to death and are all very stressed about the demonstration.
The Hero: Prince Bruton, Tarik and Griffon – Prince Bruton has been a brutal warrior since he was young, and he leads the fight against their enemies. They fight against a man named Obsidian and his followers. Fanatic priests have woven false prophesies for millennia and are using Obsidian as a pawn to further their need to seize control. Obsidian has seer abilities, and he is able to send his fanatic fighters through the void with precision and his sneak attacks have been devastating to the Aurelian forces. So, the Prince and his triad are hoping the Mark 10 cyborgs are an answer to their prayers.
The Story: Things go wrong in the demonstration because one of Evelyn’s workers whose family had been kidnapped has turned against the Empire and conspired to kill Prince Bruton and his triad by reprogramming two of the Mark 10’s and having them shoot at the triad, nearly killing them and Evelyn as well. The Prince then takes bot Evelyn and the traitor aboard his ship.
After reading the blurb, I was afraid that he would make Evelyn’s punishment to be his maid on his ship, and I thought that was way beneath her and he would be better off using her as the scientist and programmer of the Mark 10’s. I was glad to find out that she was in the brig and he switched her out for one of his new maids so he could use her abilities as a scientist and programmer.
I have read a few of Corin Cain’s alien romances lately and have really enjoyed them since they have good stories in addition to the steamy scenes. I do like a book with an interesting story. I also like the fact that the Aurelians are not your typical barbarian warriors but are technologically advanced and so the science fiction aspect of the books are better than some alien romance, where the humans are just abducted from earth and end up in a society like an ancient earth one. I mean why bother with alien romance if that is what you are going to do, you could just have the human girl fall back in time to the middle ages on earth.
The Aurelians are at war in this book and they have to orb shift through the rift, which basically takes them apart and puts them back together once they are through. Though not all of them make it through, some are lost forever in the rift. It is a very bad way to lose men and it almost doesn’t seem worth trying but since Obsidian is fighting, that way, they have no choice but to try. That is why they need so many of the Mark 10 cyborgs to bolster their forces. The battles are really detailed as is their strategy. Like I said, Corin Cain is great at writing these science fiction romances, her world building is so good.
There were definitely some things I didn’t like about this world. Especially the fact that after the wedding, the triad claims their mate in front of all the warriors in the kingdom. It is tradition and said to be for the morale of the warriors so they will know that they too can find their fated mate. Also the fact that when a man does something wrong, they are punished by lashes while women are spanked. That wasn’t something I liked. For a society that is so advanced, and one that is ruled by someone like queen Jasmine, it seems like these things really shouldn’t happen.
