Audiobook Review: The Risk (Mindf*ck, #1). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Risk by S.T. Abby

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lana: I didn’t expect him. I didn’t want to fall in love. But I can’t let him go.

Logan Bennett makes the world a safer place. He’s brilliant. He’s a hero. He locks away the sick and depraved. But while he’s saving lives, I’m taking them. Collecting the debts that are owed to me.

Ten years ago, they took from me. They left me for dead. They should have made sure I stayed dead. Now I’m taking from them. One name at a time.

Logan doesn’t know how they hurt me. He doesn’t know about the screams they ignored. He doesn’t know how twisted that town really is. He just knows people are dying. He doesn’t know he’s in love with their killer.

No one suspects a dead girl. They’re looking for a monster. Not a girl who loves red. Not a girl in love.

I’m a faceless nightmare. At least until I tell them the story they’ve pretended never happened. But in the end, will Logan choose them? Or will we watch them burn together?

The Risk

Interesting!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚❤️💜
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: ☺️🙃😳🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Lana Myers – she is executing a plan that she has waited a long time for. She has a list of names she is checking off one at a time. She studies her marks for a long time before she takes action, she knows their routine’s, their homes, where they go and what they do. She uses a knife, no taser or sedative. She has worked endlessly to make sure she comes out on top.

The Hero: Logan Bennett – an FBI agent and a profiler who can read people. He is on the trail of a brutal serial killer who has already taken the lives of four (or more) victims who were mutilated and tortured for days before being killed.

The Story: a network of men destroyed Lana’s life when she was sixteen. More than ten surgeries later, she looks like a different person. The men think she died, but she likes to remind them who she is before she makes each of them suffer for days before killing them. She extracts a pound of flesh for each time they took a turn.

I like how smart Lana is. She owns an online buy, sell and trade store and keeps up her business while enacting her revenge. She also has a bunch of countermeasures for when she kills, so the Feds think the murderer is a man. She meets Logan and he immediately gives her his number, she calls him a few days later and they get along well.

Lana has a best friend named Jake who helps her out with her revenge plan, he helps make sure she doesn’t get caught. The relationship between Logan and Lana is steamy but I found myself more interested in Lana’s past. She certainly has reasons for what she is doing, and her victims definitely deserve what they get. I was a bit surprised I didn’t like this book even more, though I have seen so many reviews for this book and the whole series and people really love it. So, I guess I will see as the rest of the series plays out.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration. It was narrated by Marie Hawkins and Tj Clark. Marie Hawkins has a clear, pleasing voice though all her voices for different characters sound pretty much the same. T.J. Clark has a good voice and does multiple characters as well, though his voice isn’t quite as deep as I usually like. This is one of a series of five audiobooks, each ranging from 3-5 hours long. I wish it was all in one set though so I could review only once instead of each book.
