The heroine: Dana – She is a human visiting Homeland because her brother Paul lives and works there and is a Nurse. Both her mom and her brother worry about her because she doesn’t date. It has been two years since her husband Tommy died. She had quit nursing school because she spent too much time in hospitals with Tommy.

The Hero: Mourn (a.k.a. #140) – He is rushed into the medical center while Dana is touring it with her brother. He is seen as a troublemaker and is in the clinic every few weeks and is considered suicidal since he lost his mate. He picks fights with other males hoping one of them will kill him.

The Story: Dana can relate to Mourn since she used to feel the same way. She told the doctors that it helps to talk with others who have been through the same thing since she attended group grief counseling after Danny died. They agreed to let her try even though Mourn is unpleasant and could be dangerous.

I don’t really like romance stories where one or both of the main characters lost someone they loved. I hate the whole ‘getting over grief’ storyline and I really like it when the characters find love for the first time. However, this one wasn’t bad. I liked how Dana and Mourn got to know each other’s story. I also loved the fact that Darkness started to help Mourn to get Dana to like him. Another thing is the fact that Species fall for someone and know immediately they want to spend their life with that person, it is insta-love at its best, but still in this context, you know it is forever. I really liked it in this story.

The heroine: Candi – as a child she was at a Mercile facility because her father worked there as a doctor and had killed her mother and her mother’s lover. However, Candi had seen too much and he was afraid she would talk unless she became part of the research. She was put into a cell with 927 who was about the same age as Candi.

The Hero: Hero (a.k.a. #927) – he and Candi were together in the same room until they got older and were only allowed to see each other once a week and had rules about not touching each other. Then one day something happened, and he never saw her again.

The Story: 23 years later, Candi was in a mental health facility. She had tried to escape a few times before but knew she would never give up. She threw away all of her medication and planned to get out once and for all after hearing that her father had died. She just found out that the Director, Penny had been sleeping with her father and had been paid well to keep her in the hospital.

Though now that he was dead and could no longer pay Penny, she was planning to kill Candi so she couldn’t tell anyone what Penny had done. Penny takes Candi on a little trip out to the woods after the drugs put Candi to sleep. Though Penny didn’t know that Candi was fully awake and pretending. When Penny stopped and tried to get Candi out of the car, Candi came out of her pretense and turned the tables on Penny and left for Homeland.

Candi shows up at Homeland and demands to be let in. She claims to be one of the New Species. She tells them that 4 days ago she escaped captivity and killed a woman who worked for Mercile. They let her in to Homeland and she tells them that she was raised at a research facility from ages 5-16 and then has been in an asylum ever since. She thinks that Mercile killed the male she loved after making him think she betrayed him, and she wants to find all the rest of the Mercile employees and make them pay.

When Hero hears the story of the female that was brought to the medical facility at Homeland who had grown up in a research facility, he runs to medical to find out what is going on. Things don’t go too smoothly from there since he thought she had betrayed him back when they were young and I didn’t really like that situation.

This was a different story than the rest in this series. There have been some where the human females worked at the Mercile research facilities where the New Species were experimented on and some where they just meet the New Species after they are free, but this is the only one where a human female grew up in a research facility along with the New Species and was also a test subject. It was a good premise and I liked it.

This book was told via solo narration in dual points of view and was narrated by Vanessa Chambers. This was the last audiobook in this series, and I have listened to them all. Though I like romance books better with both a male and a female narrator, I have to give Vanessa props for doing this series so well. She has a bunch of different voices for different characters, and I haven’t gotten sick of her voice yet, so that is telling.
