Audiobook Review: True (New Species, #11). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

True by Laurann Dohner

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jeanie loves a New Species and is willing to pay for that love with pain, tears and heartbreak. She’ll do anything to keep 710 alive but she never wants him to know how she suffered for him. He’s the reason for her mission in life—freeing others like him.

True has a new life working with the NSO to rescue his people. A good life, until he encounters a dying woman—the female who betrayed him. True should feel gratified that she’s finally going to pay for her crimes, but she claims to be a victim too. He is still irresistibly drawn to the pretty little human who touched his heart and made him want her. When he clasps her hand to offer comfort, his instincts kick in and True will fight everyone to protect her.

The heroine: Jeanie – she worked in a research facility even after Mercile Industries went down. She fell for one of the research subjects, #710 and one of her vicious coworkers named Dean found out her secret. She was forced to watch #710 be tortured in front of her and couldn’t do anything to stop it without endangering both herself and him even more. She knew her bosses were pure evil and knew that the test subjects were in hell. They were testing new drugs that enhanced healing, and to do that, the guards would severely wound the subjects over and over.

The Story: Lab technicians that disliked how things were run at Jeanne’s facility often disappeared without a trace. Jeanne was secretly trying to get her lab shut down. She had smuggled out evidence and knew if she was caught, the test subjects would be in worse shape. However, when Dean planned to use 710 to test a new drug which would make other subjects feral and hunt him to death, she knew she had to do something. When Dean promised to keep him alive in exchange for her participation in experiments on a new drug that caused excruciating pain.

The Hero: True (a.k.a. 710) – He had fallen for the technician Jeanie while he was in the research facility. He always fought against the technicians and guards. When Dean came to him one day, he tried to get 710 to agree to breed with Jeanie in exchange for him no longer attacking the guards. However, True wouldn’t agree as he knew the breeding drug would make him feral and he might harm Jeanie and Dean told 710 Jeanie was the one perfecting the drug. 710 thought she had betrayed him.

Jeanie had helped set up the rescue at the facility and a year later she was at another facility where she set up another rescue. By this time, True was on the task force which rescued New Species from new facilities they found. He finds Jeanie hurt in the facility and makes sure she gets help. Though he wants to be there for her interrogation.

The story was really good but there were quite a few plot holes that I was hoping to be filled. Especially when it came to the prison where the people that get caught at the research facilities are sent. I don’t want to go into the specific plot holes as it would give away too much of the story, but there were questions I wanted answers to and none of the characters asked those questions, when it seemed obvious to me. Though despite the plot holes, this was one of my favorites so far.

This book is told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Vanessa Chambers. Vanessa’s voice is soft and feminine. She is awesome at doing different voices for different characters and I have been binging this series for nearly a week now and haven’t gotten sick of her narration yet. I plan to go right through the rest of the series as well.
